Trent receives another huge setback

Trent Alexander-Arnold is not in Thomas Tuchel’s plans, at least for now. The current Real Madrid starting right-back has suffered two consecutive setbacks in the England squad selection process. First, he was left out of the 35-man squad announced by the manager for the friendlies against Uruguay and Japan.

Then he was overlooked again despite the absence of one of the selected defenders, Jarell Quansah. Tuchel instead chose to call up Ben White, who had not been selected for the national team for four years, rather than Trent.

The last match the Real Madrid player played for England was almost a year ago, in a World Cup qualifier against Andorra. Since then, recurring injuries and inconsistent form have pushed him out of the squad in favour of other full-backs such as Tino Livramento and even Quansah, who had been converted to the position despite being a natural centre-back.

Quansah’s injury appeared to open the door for Alexander-Arnold at the peak of his season, but even then he was not called up by Tuchel. Instead, the manager chose to reopen what seemed a closed chapter by recalling Ben White, who had been absent from the team since withdrawing just before the 2022 World Cup following disagreements with the coaching staff. The situation reflects the growing dissatisfaction surrounding Trent’s relationship with the national team.
