Regardless of the result, both teams will receive official honors for reaching tonight’s final. UEFA, in addition to awarding the iconic trophy, distributes 80 medals between the two finalists (40 per team), as stipulated by its Regulations. The medals for the winners, while gold in appearance, are made with only a small amount of actual gold combined with a majority alloy of other chemical elements. The runner-up medals, meanwhile, are sterling silver—an alloy composed of 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals by weight. Each medal is fitted with a commemorative ribbon featuring the match details (edition and venue), with the design and color changing every year.
UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin will present the 80 medals, which—beyond their obvious sentimental value—also carry significant monetary worth. Estimates place each medal’s value between $15,000 and $19,000. A prestigious prize to accompany the ‘Big Ears’ trophy that PSG and Inter are hoping to lift tonight under the Munich sky. All of Europe will be watching. Let’s hope the football lives up to the billing.
