UEFA hands Benfica’s Prestianni major punishment after Vinicius Jr. incident
UEFA issues ruling after alleged racism probe involving Vinicius Jr. and Benfica’s Prestianni during Champions League match.

UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body has handed Benfica forward Gianluca Prestianni a six-match suspension, with three of those matches suspended, following an investigation into alleged discriminatory language directed at Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr.
According to UEFA, the suspended portion of the ban will be subject to a two-year probation period starting from the date of the decision.
Alleged racist remark during Champions League playoff
The case stems from a Champions League playoff match against Real Madrid, during which Vinicius Jr. reported that Prestianni called him “mono,” a Spanish word used as a racist insult meaning “monkey,” after scoring a goal.
UEFA’s official statement said disciplinary proceedings were opened after an ethics and disciplinary inspector investigated a potential discriminatory incident involving the Benfica player.

The governing body cited “discriminatory behavior,” specifically noting homophobic language in its ruling.
Match already served and appeal rejected
The suspension includes one match Prestianni already served during the Champions League playoff tie played on February 25, 2026, between Real Madrid and Benfica.
He had previously been provisionally suspended for one match under Article 14 for discriminatory behavior, which caused him to miss the second leg at the Santiago Bernabéu. His appeal against that provisional decision was unsuccessful.
Possible global extension and World Cup implications
UEFA has also requested that FIFA extend the suspension worldwide, which could make Prestianni ineligible for international duty during the ban period.
If enforced globally, the ruling could affect his availability for major international competitions, including the World Cup.
