How will Uruguay line up for their second game of the Qatar 2022 World Cup against Portugal on Monday?

Uruguay got their Qatar 2022 World Cup campaign off to a fairly uninspiring start on Thursday as they played out a drab goalless draw against South Korea in the opening game of Group H, which means they trail Monday’s opponents Portugal by two points.

There was little for fans of either nation to get excited about in front of goal in that matchday one fixture. La Celeste were much less tidy in possession than their opponents in the first 45 minutes but managed to keep the South Koreans at arm’s length, so head coach Diego Alonso will have been pleased with his team’s defensive performance. And as we know, defending well is one of the hallmarks of a team that goes deep into a major tournament.

What Alonso will have been more concerned with, however, was his team’s attacking display and he will be looking for more of a threat on matchday two against Portugal. Uruguay did come closest to breaking the deadlock against South Korea as they hit the post twice, but those near misses came from a set-play and a trademark Fede Valverde thunderbolt from long-range; Alonso’s men created very little in open play.

Confirmed Uruguay lineup vs Portugal :

Rochet; Varela, Coates, Godín, Giménez, Oliveira; Valverde, Bentancur, Vecino; Cavani, Nuñez.
