Edinson Cavani will not play against Real Betis in Valencia’s last game before the World Cup in Qatar. The Uruguayan’s ankle is still painful and Gennaro Gattuso has ruled him out of contention to play. Cavani has not trained with the group for four days and will miss the match against Betis, just like he did against Real Sociedad. At this point, Uruguay fans will be wondering: Is the World Cup in danger for Cavani?

Gattuso had no answer: “I don’t know, it’s an assessment that the national team doctors will have to make”. Cavani has been experiencing discomfort in his right ankle for months and as such, the footballer has had a specific plan ever since he signed for Valencia. Gattuso was unable to use the striker until the fourth match-day and it was not until the 11th game when he played for the full 90 minutes. But against Barcelona, due to an unlucky knock suffered in the warm-up, Cavani asked to be substituted. He has not played since.

The Italian coach ruled him out of playing for his club team, he refused to do so regarding Uruguay. In fact, although he had no answer to the question about whether Cavani’s presence in the World Cup is in danger, he predicted that he would feature: “I hope he has a great World Cup, I hope he will have continuity and that his ankle will not bother him”. In other words, Cavani is going to travel safely with Uruguay and the medical services of Diego Alonso’s team will decide there.

"Cavani has done everything to be ready to play against Betis, but he can't"

What Valencia boss Gattuso said about Cavani:

How is Cavani?

“He has ankle problems. He hasn’t trained in the last three or four days. He won’t be in the game.”

Is he a doubt for the World Cup?

“I don’t know. I have been talking with the medical staff over the last few days. He had an injection today, on Saturday. I don’t know. I think it is an assessment that the national team has to make. Speaking with the Valencia medical staff, we have not discussed it. He is training in the gym, but over these five or six days Cavani has done everything to be ready to play, but he can’t. But he is in pain, but the guy wanted to be there, even though he couldn’t train.”

Are you worried about Cavani's ankle for the future at Valencia?

“The last MRI that was done was a week ago. His ankle is better than when he got here. But when he gets hit or makes a strange move, it hurts him. But he is better than when we signed him. He has to work, but he is a guy who likes to work. I hope he has a great World Cup, I hope he has continuity and that his ankle does not bother him.”
