18 May 2022 will be a historic day for the sport of women’s soccer around the world after the US Soccer Federation agreed to a historic equal pay deals. The United States men’s and women’s national teams struck an equal pay deal in the new Collective Bargaining Agreement that will run through 2028.

“To finally get to the point where on every economic term it’s equal pay, I am just really proud,” USSF president Cindy Parlow Cone said. “I think this is going to be a historic moment and hopefully it will create change throughout the world.”

What does it mean to the sport of soccer?

This is a historic agreement for the sports of soccer because other national federations like New Zealand, Brazil or England (among others), had proclaimed “equal pay” but it was only an equal percentage of FIFA prize money, which is much lower for women than for men according to journalist Graham Wahl.

Key aspects of the new deal

The USWNT and USMNT will have the same performance-based bonuses for all games and competitions. This means that the USWNT will have the same pay-to-play structure as the USMNT. The Women’s and Men’s naitonal teams will pool and share the same FIFA World Cup prizes. Also, there will be an identical commercial and ticket sharing.
