USA 2-2 Canada: summary, score, goals, highlights, 2023 Gold Cup
USA - Canada: Gold Cup: as it happened
The United States made it through to the semi-finals of the 2023 Gold Cup with a thrilling penalty shoot-out victory over Canada. For BJ Callaghan's largely US-based side it was a huge moment and one that leaves them just two games away from a record-equalling seventh Gold Cup triumph.
USMNT were final team to book their place in the final four after a breathless set of quarter-finals. Here's full details of the semi-final fixtures in the 2023 Gold Cup...
After a lacklustre 85 minutes or so, this contest came alive late on with the US thinking they had progressed from a late Brandon Vazquez headed effort only for Canada captain Vitoria to draw level from the spot.
Extra time ensued and Les Rouges took the lead for the first time as Shaffelburg fired home after a fine solo run.
Canadian hearts were broken soon afterwards when a Busio shot was saved by St Clair but the ball ricocheted off a Canada defender to offer the US a lifeline.
The Arsenal stopper Matt Turner proved to be the hero of the night for the home side as he saved the first two spot kicks from Canada players as the US advance and face Panama on Wednesday night in San Diego.
Incredible drama in Ohio.
Matt Turner the hero for the USA.
Brym for Canada...
He hits the bar.... the US advance....
Ferreira to take next.
The Dallas striker scores.
USA 3-2 CAN
Jacen Russell-Rowe scores and sends the Asenal keeper the wrong way
Busio to take for the US.
The Venezia man scores. Great strike from the 21-year-old.
US 2-1 CAN
Miller next up for Canada.
The Inter Miami defender scores.
Cade Cowell has been excellent for the US...
The sub scores!
USA 1-0 CAN
Liam Fraser to hit next for Canada.
The No. 3 has his kick saved well by Turner.
Vazquez set to take first for the US.
The local hero blazes over.
US 0-0 CAN
Vitoria to take first for Canada.
The Canucks captain has his effort saved.
Huge pressure for both sets of players and fans.
So.... the fourth Gold Cup quarter final will be decided on spot kicks.
The whistle sounds and it ends 2-2.
Penalty kicks will be used to determine who faces Panama in the 2023 Gold Cup semi final.
Miazga carded as he collides with St Clair in the Canada goal.
Canada forced to defend deep as the have for much of the contest.
Cowell fouled as desperation is palpable with a minute to go.
Three minutes left.
What drama here from minute 85 after a tame initial period.
Corner for the US with Ferreira to take.
So unlucky for Canada as St Clair repels the Busio effort but the ball ricochets off Kennedy and into the back of the net.
Reynolds makes way for Roldan.
Not since 1957 have Canada beaten the USMNT on US soil.... are we poised to see a major chapter written in the histpry of the Canada soccer books?
Jacob Shaffelburg is the hero for Canada as he fires home with a left footed effort that Turner can do nothing about.
Fine chance for Busio as he fires but his effort is straight at the Canadian keeper.
Canada start the action....
15 minutes to decide who heads to San Diego to face Panama and who packs their bag and waves farewell to the 2023 Gold Cup.
The whistle sounds and it remains 1-1 as we head towards the final 15 minutes of the contest.
Ferreira finds Cowell and the SJ Earthquakes striker has his effort blocked but only for a corner for the US.
Miazga heads from the corner and St Clair saves majestically.
Past the 100 minute mark we go.
The US still probling with Cowell and Busio looking busy.
Extra time developing a similar pattern to the regular game with the US the dominant force and Canada happy to strike on the counter.
Cade Cowell carded after a lunge.
A defeat tonight for the US would be the last time BJ Callaghan oversees the team with Berhalter waiting to take the reins once the Gold Cup has concluded.
Canada almost take the lead as Russell-Rowe steers the ball over with a decent first time left footed effort.
The 20-year-old was leaning back as he struck the ball after a fine delivery from Wothespoon.
The US start the extra time period.
McGraw makes way for Kennedy.
Don't forget that should things not be decided after this additional half an hour of action, we'll have a penalty shoot out.
The whistle sounds and it will be a further 30 minutes of extra time.
A wild ending to the game after a rather non eventful first 85 minutes or so.
We've now played seven minutes of added time.
Canada corner.
Is there another late twist in this last quarter final of the tournament?
The US clear ....
Vitoria to take... The central defender scores and Canada are level.
Robinson handles and the Mexican ref points to the spot.
Just when it seemed that we were destined for a further 30 minutes, up steps the FC Cincinatti player to nod home.
Brandon Vázquez breaks Canada hearts as he heads past St Clair to put the US in the driving seat.
Jordan Morris set to come on for the USMNT. Ferreira the player likely to be subbed with the FC Dallas man poo tonight.
Into the final five minutes of the contest and as things stand, we're heading to the first session of extra time in the 2023 Gold Cup.
More changes imminent for Canada.
Laryea needs attention as we drift towards the 80th minute of the contest.
A place in the semi-final of the 2023 Gold Cup (vs Panama) is on the line.
Into the final quarter of an hour.
Still no way through for the US, 15 minutes left for Canada to hold on as Vazquez goes close with his shot going inches wide.
Miazga and Vazquez come on to a roar of delight (both play for FC Cincinnati)
Mihailovic and Neal making way.
Rowe on for Cavallini
Ahmed off with Wotherspoon.
Changes for Canada
Cowell has looked good since making his introduction as he has a go from distance but fails to get any accuracy on the effort.
Best chance of the night falls to Busio as the Venezia man tries to poke home but St Clair does really well to get down quickly and stop the effort.
25 minutes remain and the game is still lacking in terms of goal mouth excitement.
One senses though that Canada are quite happy with the way the game is panning out.
Osorio now carded for a trip as Zendejas is replaced by Cade Cowell.
Change for Canada:
Bombito off and Liam Fraser his replacement
Busio strikes but the wall does their job and the ball is out for a corner.
Another card for Canada as Miller (K) clips Busio and danger for the visitors with the free right on the edge of the Canada box.
Zendejas is fouled and the card is out for McGraw.
One senses that the pattern of the game suits Canada.
The men in white have yet to really be stretched by the USA and surely it's only a question of time before we see a few switches.
Jones is clipped by Laryea and the US win a dangerous free.
Gressel to take ...St Clair punches away and Canada can breathe.
Canada on the ropes now at the start of the second half with the US playing with added intensity.
Bright start from the US as the ball is worked to Djordje Mihailovic who sees his shot blocked.
No changes at the break.
The US start the second half.
The teams return to the pitch.
The US out first and should things remain 0-0 after 90 minutes, then we'd head to extra time.
The US seem to be lacking their creative spark tonight but Canada are certainly sterner opposition compared to St Kitts and Trinidad & Tobago.
Not a great deal to talk about in terms of scoring chances in the half.
The US were the better side but flashes from Millar and Osorio showed that Canada can create danger too.
All square in Ohio.
Into the 12th minute of time added on as Zendejas is scythed down as the whistle sounds.
Canada finishing the half strongly too.
After 55 minutes of first half action, not a single shot on or off target from the Gold Cup favourites.
No penalty awarded by the Mexican.
Moments of confusion as the outcome is a free for the USA.
Yes, that looks like a clear penalty for Les Rouges with a Robinson handball.
Reynolds almost steers the ball into his own net as he clips the ball over the bar with Millar lurking at the back post.
John Herdman will be happy with how things have unfolded in this first half.
Despite his side creating little, they have been able to keep the US at bay.
We'll have ten minutes of time added on.
Millar breaks and appeals for a foul as the US counter.
Still neither side able to muster a shot on target during the half with Canada having one off target.
A quiet 45' minutes for both keepers (so far).
First card of the night goes to Canada's Cavallini as he leads with his studs showing.
We'll probably have an additional 7/8 minutes of time added on at the end of the half due to the stoppage after the linesman was hit by a stray ball.
Danger for Canada as the US probe. The final ball just lacking as Canada succumb to pressure from the home side.
Great work from Jones as he wins another corner for the USA.
The move comes to nothing but it's the side in blue in the ascendancy now. We've seen little or nothing from Jesus Ferreira bar that earlier blocked shot.
We pass the half hour mark and it's been a slow and tense opening at the TQL Stadium with neither side able to boast of a clear scoring opportunity.
The ball falls to Ferreira but the Dallas striker sees his effort blocked by Osorio.
Laryea goes to ground in the box and appeals for a spot kick. Both the referee and subsequently say no penalty.
US win another corner with Canada very much in this tie as we approach the half hour mark.
The winner of tonight's clash is off to San Diego where Panama await in the semi-final with Canada beating the Canaleros in the semi-final of the recent Nations League.
First chance of the night falls to Busio but the Venezia player screws his shot wide of St Clair's goal.
Better from Canada with Millar instrumental in Canada's attacking play.
Neither keeper has been called upon at this stage of the game.
The delay has muted the crowd a little but it's the US who have had the better start to the quarter final clash.
Lucas Cavallini very much the sole striker for Canada tonight as the Xolos man is set to have a busy evening.
Back underway as the US win the first corner of the game.
The linesman exits the pitch and will be replaced.
So, a seven minute delay to the start of the game and we're set to restart.
Looks like the fourth official may need to take over as it appears that the linesman is bleeding and appears to be suffering from concussion.
The game is briefly held up as the linesman takes a ball to the face and needs medical attention.
All set... just 36 minutes later than the published kick-off time, we're underway in Ohio.
Just three weeks after their Nations League final, the US and Canada meet again.
It's a full house at the TQL Stadium tonight with 26,000 fans packed into the home ground for MLS side FC Cincinnati.
The teams take to the pitch led by referee Ortiz from Mexico.
First up we'll have the national anthems.
Should we have a tie at the end of 90 minutes, we'll have a further 30 minutes of extra time and should things be all square after 120 minutes, then a penalty shootout would be used to determine a winner.
As yet, none of the quarter final games in the 2023 Gold Cup have needed additional time.
All set at the TQL Stadium as the teams wait in the tunnel.
US head coach BJ Callaghan aware that his team struggled in the first game against Jamaica due to limited preparation time but now feels his squad have grown into each game with players now comfortable as they advance in the tournament.
A reminder of the teams as we countdown to kick-off.
