The United States made it through to the semi-finals of the 2023 Gold Cup with a thrilling penalty shoot-out victory over Canada. For BJ Callaghan's largely US-based side it was a huge moment and one that leaves them just two games away from a record-equalling seventh Gold Cup triumph.

USA survive and secure semi-final berth

After a lacklustre 85 minutes or so, this contest came alive late on with the US thinking they had progressed from a late Brandon Vazquez headed effort only for Canada captain Vitoria to draw level from the spot.

Extra time ensued and Les Rouges took the lead for the first time as Shaffelburg fired home after a fine solo run.

Canadian hearts were broken soon afterwards when a Busio shot was saved by St Clair but the ball ricocheted off a Canada defender to offer the US a lifeline.    

The Arsenal stopper Matt Turner proved to be the hero of the night for the home side as he saved the first two spot kicks from Canada players as the US advance and face Panama on Wednesday night in San Diego.

The US still probling with Cowell and Busio looking busy.

Extra time developing a similar pattern to the regular game with the US the dominant force and Canada happy to strike on the counter.

Cowell has looked good since making his introduction as he has a go from distance but fails to get any accuracy on the effort.

Best chance of the night falls to Busio as the Venezia man tries to poke home but St Clair does really well to get down quickly and stop the effort.

25 minutes remain and the game is still lacking in terms of goal mouth excitement.

One senses though that Canada are quite happy with the way the game is panning out.

Osorio now carded for a trip as Zendejas is replaced by Cade Cowell.

Busio strikes but the wall does their job and the ball is out for a corner.

One senses that the pattern of the game suits Canada.

The men in white have yet to really be stretched by the USA and surely it's only a question of time before we see a few switches.

The US seem to be lacking their creative spark tonight but Canada are certainly sterner opposition compared to St Kitts and Trinidad & Tobago.

The move comes to nothing but it's the side in blue in the ascendancy now. We've seen little or nothing from Jesus Ferreira bar that earlier blocked shot.

We pass the half hour mark and it's been a slow and tense opening at the TQL Stadium with neither side able to boast of a clear scoring opportunity.

The ball falls to Ferreira but the Dallas striker sees his effort blocked by Osorio.

Looks like the fourth official may need to take over as it appears that the linesman is bleeding and appears to be suffering from concussion.

Just three weeks after their Nations League final, the US and Canada meet again.

It's a full house at the TQL Stadium tonight with 26,000 fans packed into the home ground for MLS side FC Cincinnati.

Should we have a tie at the end of 90 minutes, we'll have a further 30 minutes of extra time and should things be all square after 120 minutes, then a penalty shootout would be used to determine a winner.

Tonight's game at the TQL Stadium will be overseen by Mexican referee Marco Ortiz.

Ortiz, who has been an official FIFA referee since 2018 and is also a high profile Liga MX match official and regarded as one of the finest in Concacaf.

Both teams will wear their away jerseys in Cincinnati with the US to sport their blue with 'Les Rouges' in white.

Bell bagging the only goal of the game for the Reggae Boyz in the 51st minute and the Caribbean side will now face Mexico on Wednesday.

FC Dallas striker Jesús Ferreira is in the midst of a historic run of form for the USMNT as he became the first player in team history to net hat tricks in back-to-back games with his triples against St. Kitts and Trinidad.

His third career hat trick tied him with Landon Donovan for the most in team history with just 21 games played at the senior international level

This is how the rest of the 2023 Gold Cup is shaping up.

Panama and Mexico are already in the semi-final with El Tri set to face the winners of Guatemala/Jamaica.

The Canaleros will play the winners of USA/Canada.

Tonight's game marks the 40th meeting all-time vs. Canada and the 24th in official competition. Les Rouges are the third most frequent opponent in USMNT history, trailing Mexico (73) and Costa Rica (42)

The U.S. is 17-10-12 all-time vs. Canada, 4-0-1 at the Gold Cup and 10-8-5 in official competition.

Panama await in semi final

The winners of tonight's US-Canada clash will face Panama in Wednesday night's semi-final clash after Panama eased past Qatar on Saturday night and booked their place in the semi of the Gold Cup 2023.

Édgar Bárcenas opened the score for Los Canaleros and Ismael Díaz sealed the victory with a record-breaking performance for Panama.

The 26-year-old winger scored three times in just 11 minutes to take the game away from Qatar and wrote his name into the history books. Díaz’s treble is the fastest hat-trick in the history of the Gold Cup.

Canada will look to their 2-0 win as part of World Cup 2022 qualifying as a source of inspiration with the US having the edge in recent games over their neighbours from the north.

The Stars and Stripes will play Canada in the quarterfinals of the Gold Cup after topping Group A with seven points. USMNT are the reigning champions but face tough opposition in John Herdman’s team as his Canada side went defeated in the group stage.
