John Brooks wants to play in the FIFA World Cup with the United States men’s national team in November, but he is currently without a club after ending his contract with Wolfsburg in June. The 29-year-old is now a free agent and according to the latest reports, Mallorca is closing in on a deal to sign the American.

Brooks first experience in La Liga

The United States international spent five seasons with the Bundesliga side and made 146 appearances across all competitions. John Brooks has spent his entire career in Germany and if the deal goes through with Mallorca, it will be his first time in La Liga, becoming only the second American to put on the red jersey, alongside Matthew Hoppe in 2021.

This will open the door for Brooks to return to the United States men’s national team for the first time since the 2021 CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers. Brooks was supposed to join the October camp last year, but an injury ruled him out. USMNT’s manager Gregg Berhalter spoke with ESPN about the possibilities of Brooks receiving a call up for the tournament.

“We want to play with a very high line, right? So ideally, if he went into a team that plays with a high line, and we can see that every week, how he’s dealing with space behind him, it would really help us get a picture of what he can do for our team. So, he hadn’t been doing that with Wolfsburg,” Berhalter said. “To me, it’s a question of: Let’s see where John ends up. Let’s see what club he ends up at and let’s see how his form is throughout the fall. And then we can evaluate.”
