No Serie A player has provided more assists in the 2023-24 season than USMNT midfielder Weston McKennie, who set up goals for Andrea Cambiaso and Arkadiusz Milik in Juventus’ 2-2 draw against Atalanta on Sunday.

McKennie closes on Giroud after four assists in two Serie A games

With his team trailing 1-0 with 25 minutes left to play, McKennie threaded a pass through for Cambiaso to level the scores from eight yards. And just four minutes later, the former Schalke man cleverly chested a cross down for Milik, whose strike evaded Marco Carnesecchi in the visiting goal. Juve couldn’t hold on for all three points, however, and surrendered second spot to AC Milan, for whom Christian Pulisic scored the only goal against Empoli earlier in the day.

Almost out of nowhere, McKennie has become one of the most productive attacking players in Italy in recent weeks. After providing only three assists in his first 24 Serie A appearances of the season, he has now set up four goals in his last two league games, also teeing up both of Dusan Vlahovic’s strikes in the win over Frosinone on 25 February.

His seven assists mean he is the joint second most frequent provider of goals in the Italian top division, alongside stellar names such as Roma’s Paulo Dybala, Rafael Leão of AC Milan, and Inter duo Marcus Thuram and Henrikh Mykhitaryan. Veteran Milan striker Olivier Giroud leads the way on eight.

USMNT midfielder Italy’s joint chief creator in all competitions

However, another two-assist game, also at home to Frosinone in the Coppa Italia in January, leaves McKennie on nine in all competitions, which is the joint most of any Serie A player this season, alongside Giroud and his Milan teammate Théo Hernandez. He has, though, yet to score a goal himself.

When McKennie was allowed to leave Juventus for Leeds United on loan in January 2023, it looked as if his days with the Old Lady may be numbered.

He failed to impress in the Premier League as they The Whites were relegated but returned to Turin and has become a regular fixture in Max Allegri’s midfield in Serie A.
