USMNT stars shine in PSV Eindhoven thrashing
Sergino Dest, Ricardo Pepi and Malik Tillman were on form for the Eredivisie leaders in their 7-1 thrashing of PEC Zwolle.
PSV Eindhoven’s stunning Eredivisie campaign continued apace on Saturday, putting seven goals past PEC Zwolle.
Peter Bosz’s side were 2-1 ahead at the break but five second half goals gave the Dutch league leaders a comfortable victory. Luuk de Jong scored a hat trick for PSV, taking his tally for the season to 22 goals in 23 Eredivisie games.
It was also a good night for PSV’s American contingent, all of whom contributed a goal in the win. Sergino Dest and Malik Tillman both registered an assist, while Ricardo Pepi was on the scoresheet.
The trio made history earlier this week when they became the first trio of USMNT players to play in a Champions League knockout game. On current form PSV are one of the best teams in Europe and there is a streak of red, white and blue running through the middle of the team.
Speaking after the game Bosz was full of praise for his side: “We built up well from back and dared to play football. PEC Zwolle tried to put a lot of pressure on, but we played well against it. We did a fantastic job tonight. You go to rest with only 2-1 even though you are playing very well.”
Chucky Lozano makes an impact for PSV
Mexican winger Hirving ‘Chucky’ Lozano has not found his best form since returning to the club where he made his name in Europe. Lozano has been part of a winning team but his individual numbers have been modest and young wideman Noa Lang has kept him out at times.
An injury to Lang has handed Lozano more opportunities and he took his chance on Saturday. The 28-year-old contributed an assist for team captain De Jong in the second half, firing a dangerous low cross along the six-yard box.
Lozano will hope that his performance against PEC Zwolle leaves him in possession of the starter’s jersey going into a crucial period in the team’s season.
Next weekend they host reigning champions Feyenoord in a game that could well wrap up the title for PSV.
Later in March they head to Germany for the second leg of the Champions League tie against Borussia Dortmund. The scores are level after a 1-1 draw in the first leg and PSV will be hopeful of making it to the quarter-finals of the competition for the first time since 2006/07.
