USMNT 0-1 Uruguay: summary, score, goals, highlights Copa América
USMNT - Uruguay: As it happened
USMNT exit Copa America after Uruguay loss
The United States are eliminated from Copa America at the group stage phase after failing to beat Uruguay on Monday evening. The pressure on head coach Gregg Berhalter will only increase after this disappointing tournament showing, particularly the 2-1 defeat to Panama that has effectively ensured their exit.
Speaking after the game USMNT captain Christian Pulisic expressed a sense of regret that the US had not been able to break down a well-drilled Uruguay side.
"We brought a lot of energy but, at the end of the day, not enough quality," he said. "I don't want to talk too much about the ref but it was frustrating."
Peeeep peeeeep peeeeeeeep
That's that! The United States' brief Copa America campaign falls at the first hurdle, a group stage exit on home turf.
That's a major blow for this group of players ahead of the 2026 World Cup and tonight's defeat may well spell the end for Gregg Berhalter.
After a sustained spell of US pressure Uruguay finally get the ball back and look to slow things down. They win a throw-in on their left flank and will take as long as possible taking it.
The ball drops to Malik Tillman on the edge of the box but his low drive is blocked. It's a USMNT throw-in but they'll have to wait, Nandez is down injured.
USMNT are getting desperate now, in need of two goals swiftly. Pulisic is trying to lead his team on but he's swamped by Uruguayan defenders every time he gets the ball.
Brilliant footwork from Pulisic to skip through the challenges and make space for the shot. It's deflected out for a corner but the referee, incredibly, gives a goal kick.
Pulisic is absolutely seething, but the referee will not change his mind.
Elsewhere is Group C, Panama have taken a 3-1 lead over Bolivia.
The job is clear now for USMNT. They have to beat Uruguay to avoid elimination. Two goals in the five remaining minutes.
There will be six minutes of added time art Arrowhead.
Weston McKennie clips Olivera on the halfway line. Uruguay will take their time with this set piece.
Double change for Uruguay. Nunez and Ugarte are replaced by Sebastian Caceres and Luis Suarez.
Brilliant play from USMNT!
The US carve through Uruguay with slick passing from Pulisic, Reyna and Robinson, pulling the ball back to Haji Wright on the penalty spot. The striker takes too long on the ball and Uruguay get back to block the shot.
The chance is squandered but that was quality play from the US. Can they mount a late charge?
Cristian Olivera looks to counter on the US but can't bring down a long ball. The chance goes begging.
The corner kick comes to nothing but USMNT are straight back on the attack. Robinson charges down the left and picks out Wright in the middle but his touch is loose and the ball ends up in the arms of Rochet.
A good spell of sustained pressure for the US now, pinning Uruguay back. McKennie hurls in a couple of long throws, before Reyna wins his team a corner kick.
There's an expectant roar around the Arrowhead now...

Another change for USMNT. Haji Wright is coming on at the next stoppage.
The US are really going for it now, two goals needed in 15 minutes.
We're into the final 15 minutes now and the US are starting to look a little tired. Uruguay have dominated the ball in the second half and Gregg Berhalter's team are struggling to get a hold in the game.
That was a big chance for a player of Pulisic's quality, could he have done better? There were a lot of bodies in between him and the goal and no clear gap for the finish.
Uruguay clear off the line!
There's a mix-up at the back and USMNT pounce. The ball is worked to Pulisic, who tries to fire past the scrambling Rochet but his effort is deflected and headed away on the goal line.

Bolivia level!
Huge news in Group C as Bolivia equalise against Panama. Now, the US just need one goal to leapfrog Panama and snatch second place in the group.
The drama!
VAR decision - Goal!
It looked incredibly close but the goal will stand. As it stands, USMNT have just over 20 minutes to score two goals and save their Copa America dreams.
On second viewing it looks like Olivera may have strayed offside before leaping on the loose ball. This could well be ruled out for a marginal offside...
GOOOOAAAAAAAL! Mathias Olivera
Uruguay lead! A dangerous ball into the box found the head of Araujo. Turner made a good save from the first effort but Matihas Olivera was on hand to poke the rebound home.

Yunus Musah is penalised for an overzealous challenge on Ugarte on the halfway line.
There's a real sense of tension now as we enter the final half an hour. Panama's lead means that the US need to win here, but even a one-goal victory would be enough to see them through to the quarter-finals.
Joe Scally appears to be in pain but the US have still not actually made that sub. The right-back hobbles on while Moore continues his lengthy warm-up on the touchline.
Good defensive work from Anotonee Robinson to get back and stop Pellistgri's progress as he charges into the box. Goal kick USMNT, approaching the hourmark.
Joe Scally is coming off for USMNT. Nashville's Shaq Moore is being readied in his place.
Joe Scally
Another injury concern as the right-back goes down for USMNT. There didn't seem to be any contact there, the issue is potentially a consequence of a heavy challenge from Nunez in the first half.
Clever ball forward from Nandez nearly finds Cristian Olivera drifting into the box. The LAFC man can't quite latch onto the pass and it bounces out for a US goal kick.
Uruguay live dangerous at the back but manage to get the ball clear just in time. The US have dropped back a bit since the break but are still managing to press high when the time is right.
The cross finds the head of Matias Vina but his effort is just wide of the target. Matt Turner was struggling there.

And we're back!
Uruguay get the second half underway at Arrowhead Stadium.

Frantically working out the permutations for the United States? Gregg Berhalter's team have been given a tough task, but all is not lost with 45 minutes to go against Uruguay...
What do the US need to progress?

All square at Arrowhead
It's goalless between USMNT and Uruguay in a hard-fought game in Kansas City. The US started as the stronger of the two teams but Uruguay started to take control as the half reached an end.
All to play for at the break, USMNT fans will be dreaming of a historic win.
Brilliant pass from Reyna to find Robinson on the left. He aims for Pepi in the middle but the cross is headed clear by Araujo.
Joe Scally looks to be in some pain here. He lies on the ground as medical staff attend to him on the field. It looked like he got a boot to the ankle from Nunez in that challenge.
It'll be a painful one, but he should be ok to continue.
Darwin Nunez
The Uruguayan is booked for a rash challenge on Joe Scally near the touchline.
Uruguay are looking to force the issue in the final minutes of the first half. They've improved as the game has worn on, managing to pin the US back into their own half.
We'll have five minutes of added time at the end of the first half.

They're dropping like flies. Ronald Araujo goes down after a clash with Folarin Balogun and winds up with a bloodied nose. He'll have to leave the field of play for a few minutes to stem the bleeding.
Back to the action, Uruguay are starting to gain a bit of a foothold now and Marcelo Bielsa's side is starting to cut through the US midfield.
Here's what we know so far about that head injury for Maximiliano Araujo that forced him off midway through the USMNT - Uruguay game...
Sensational from Tim Ream!
The veteran defender saves his team from a certain goal.
Uruguay break swiftly and Olivera gets in on goal, chipping the ball over Turner. Ream sprints back and volleys the ball clear as it was bouncing into an empty net.
The pace of the game has slowed slightly after that injury break. Uruguay are starting to enjoy a little more of the ball now.
Maxi Araujo is off, replaced by LAFC forward Cristian Olivera.
Tim Ream is fine to continue.
Araujo seems to have sustained the worst of the challenge, he's being stretchered off the field. It doesn't look too serious, thankfully.
Maxi Araujo and Tim Ream collide in the box and both players go down holding their heads. This looks like it could be serious.
Joe Scally intercepts a clipped ball over the top for Maxi Araujo but gives away a corner kick. Uruguay have a chance to deliver but the US defend it well and get it clear.
With 20 minutes gone Gregg Berhalter will be pretty happy with his team's performance. They've enjoyed plenty of the ball and have been strong in the tackle, helping to upset this fluid Uruguayan side.
Nahitan Nandez is penalised for two fouls in quick succession but manages to avoid a booking. The US do, however, win a free kick in a good crossing position on the left.
Pulisic steps up to take, but overhits it and the ball flies out for a Uruguay goal kick.
Good defending from Scally to block the progress of Maxi Araujo and win his team a throw-in. The right-back has quietly been one of the US' best players this tournament.
Tyler Adams
The USMNT midfielder is a little late as he tries to pinch the ball ahead of Mathias Olivera and finds himself in the referee's book. He'll have to be careful now.
Yunus Musah loses the ball in the midfield and Uruguay have a chance to get a bit of control now. They play a couple of passes around at the back before looking forward to Nunez.
He can't control the long pass and the US recover the ball.
It's a good ball but the US can't win the first header and Uruguay get it clear.

Christian Pulisic is clipped by Pellistri on the edge of the Uruguay box and goes down demanding a free kick. It looked like a good appeal too, but the referee says no.
USMNT fans don't like that call.
Nearly a nightmare for USMNT!
Chris Richards underhits a backpass and Matt Turner has to scramble from his goal line to clear. That would have been a bad start.
Front-foot start from USMNT as they look to generate an early chance for Balogun but just run out of room. Goal kick to Uruguay.
And we're off!
We're underway at Arrowhead Stadium.
We're nearly ready for kickoff!
The two teams are huddled in the respective halves as 'Darude - Sandstorm' blares over the stadium PA system.
The stakes could hardly be higher, we're nearly ready for the off...
And the Uruguay starting XI
Marcelo Bielsa names a full-strength team this evening. Real Madrid star Fede Valverde wears the captain's armband for Uruguay.
Here's how the United States line up
With kickoff fast approaching, let's take a quick look at the two teams. First up, here's how Gregg Berhalter's USMNT will start...
Luis Suarez starts on the bench for Uruguay
The veteran superstar may not be the player that he once was, but he remains one of the deadliest finishers in world soccer when given the opportunity. The Inter Miami striker was recalled to the national team for this summer's tournament and will be desperate to pick up some international silverware so late in his storied career.
The players are out at Arrowhead Stadium!
USMNT and Uruguay exit the tunnel and enter into a frenzied atmosphere at Arrowhead Stadium. The United States have it all to do today, needing a result against an in-form Uruguay side to book their place in the knockout rounds of Copa America.
Uruguayan support in good numbers at Arrowhead Stadium
As we've seen across this summer's tournament, there is a significant South American contingent in stadiums to watch their teams play. There are close to 50,000 Uruguayans currently living in the United States and more than a few of them appear to be in Kansas City this evening.
Can the United States pull off a huge shock by beating Uruguay and snatching a place in the quarter-finals of the 2024 Copa America? In fact, they may not even need a win to progress at the expense of Panama.
We take a look at all the permutations on the final day of action from Group C...
United States put through their paces
The stakes could not be higher going into the final group stage game for USMNT. They need a result against Uruguay to book their place in the quarter-finals and avoid an embarrassing group stage exit on home soil.
We're less than 20 minutes away from kickoff now. How are the nerves, US fans?
We will, of course, have full live commentary of USMNT - Uruguay right here on AS USA. But you can also choose to watch or stream the game online; here's everything you need to know...
Alexi Lalas gives USMNT pep talk
The United States' future in the 2024 Copa America all comes down to this evening's games. With it all to play for, USMNT legend Alexi Lalas has sent this motivational message to the players ahead of tonight's Uruguay challenge.
One to watch: Darwin Nunez
He's not always the most reliable in front of goal, but there are few strikers in world soccer that are as difficult to play against as Uruguay and Liverpool star Darwin Nunez. A pacey, direct forward with an eye for the spectacular, Nunez has already scored twice in two games at this year's Copa America and is always able to generate chances for himself.
With thanks to our friends at Sofascore, here's a closer look at the Uruguayan's stats...
Chad 'OchoCinco' Johnson supporting USMNT
The former NFL star appears confident ahead of tonight's do-or-die Copa America clash. The United States need to match Panama's result this evening but they face a considerably tougher task against Uruguay.
Tyler Adams slams "toxic" social media after USMNT players suffer racist abuse
In the aftermath of the United States' loss to Panama, a number of players on the team suffered shocking racist abuse online. US Soccer has issued a statement condemning the attacks and has backed those who were the subject of the offensive remarks.
At a press conference on Saturday, USMNT midfielder Tyler Adams had his say on the depressing development.
The United States were not happy with the officiating of referee Ivan Barton in the defeat to Panama, with many former players claiming that he had been too willing to let things go in a feisty game.
"The officiating in CONCACAF is so poor," former US striker Jozy Altidore said on social media. "Too many times we see refs in this region having no control over matches. A lot of these tackles and red cards could be prevented with proper officiating from the onset."
This time around Kevin Ortega will be in charge for the visit of Uruguay. Here's what we know about him...
So, what can we deduce from that USMNT lineup?
Firstly, Gregg Berhalter has kept faith with the same players that have started in each of the previous two games of Copa America. The only alteration has been the replacement of the suspended Tim Weah with Yunus Musah.
The addition of Musah will hopefully firm up the US midfield, adding another ball-winning in place of the more ephemeral Gio Reyna, who will start on the right flank. This should help the US to deal with Uruguay's all-action midfield but it does leave the team a little short of width, with both Reyna and Christian Pulisic on the other flank likely to drift inside to influence the game.
USMNT team news confirmed!
Here it is, the starting XI picked by Gregg Berhalter to take on the mighty Uruguay.
There is only one, enforced, change form the previous game against Panama. Yunus Musah comes in for the suspended Tim Weah. Gio Reyna shifts out to the right flank to replace Weah.
USMNT in the house
The US side have arrived at Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City for this do-or-die clash. Haji Wright, pictured on the right, is one of a number of candidates to replace the suspended Tim Weah on the right flank.
Weah received a straight red card for lashing out at an opponent in the defeat to Panama, a mistake that may well have cost his team a place in the quarter-finals. Brenden Aaronson, Josh Sergeant and Ricardo Pepi are other players who could receive a chance from the start in Weah's absence.
USMNT are currently joint second in Group C, level on points with Panama. The US boast a slightly better goal difference than the Panamanians so they just need to match their result on this final day of group stage fixtures.
The only problem? The quality of their opponents is significantly different...
Kingdom awaits USMNT
The Kansas City Chiefs have achieved dynasty status in NFL and the US will hope to channel some of that championship-winning energy this evening. USMNT got Copa America off to a promising start with the win over Bolivia but collapsed against Panama in their second game, leaving them needing a result against Uruguay to progress.
We're still awaiting confirmed team news for USMNT but we know that there will be at least one change to the starting XI that was beaten by Panama last time out.
Here's how we think Gregg Berhalter might line up in the crucial clash...
Uruguay team news!
Here's how Marcelo Bielsa chooses to start this evening, it's a full-strength side for Uruguay. They boast Real Madrid's Fede Valverde and Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez, players who can hurt this US backline.
Scene is set at Arrowhead Stadium
The home of the Kansas City Chiefs will play host to this crucial game, with USMNT facing considerable odds to reach the quarter-finals of Copa America. They take on the strongest side in the group, Uruguay, and will be without the suspended Tim Weah after his red card against Panama.
Wondering who's playing today in Copa America? It's not just the US who are battling to progress, the whole of Group C is in action on Monday, July 1.
All-or-nothing for USMNT
Tonight will be failure or glory for the US. After losing to Panama in their last game they need a result against an in-form Uruguay side who are many people's tip to win the tournament. It will need a historic performance form Gregg Berhalter's side to secure passage, but can they muster something special?
Tonight could well be the end of the line for Gregg Berhalter.
The USMNT head coach has struggled to leave a real imprint in the team during his time in charge and they stand just 90 minutes from being grouped in a home tournament, a nightmare scenario ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
I'm Will Gittins, US soccer journalist for AS USA, and I'll be bringing you all the action from a crucial evening for USMNT...
