USMNT vs Jamaica summary: Vázquez equaliser, score, goals, highlights | 2023 Gold Cup
After Damion Lowe’s early goal for Jamaica, Brandon Vázquez’s late leveller salvaged a draw for the USMNT in the opening game of the 2023 Gold Cup on Saturday.
The United States men’s national team needed a late Brandon Vázquez strike to rescue a point against Jamaica in Saturday’s 2023 Gold Cup opener.
Earlier, Damion Lowe had given the Jamaicans a quickfire lead at Soldier Field, before Leon Bailey missed a first-half penalty for the Reggae Boyz.
Lowe heads Jamaica in front, Turner denies Bailey
With just 13 minutes on the clock in Chicago, Demarai Gray lifted a right-wing free-kick into the USMNT box, where Lowe sent a firm header past goalkeeper Matt Turner and into the corner of the net.
The hosts immediately threw themselves at Jamaica in search of an equaliser, but found their route to Andre Blake’s goal blocked.
And as BJ Callaghan’s men struggled to bring themselves back into the game, the Jamaicans were given a chance to double their advantage when Aidan Morris caught Kevon Lambert with a high boot in the area.
However, Turner dived quickly to his left to save Bailey’s spot-kick, and the Aston Villa forward was unable to turn the rebound goalwards.
Lembikisa error allows Vázquez to score
The USMNT also toiled in attack in the second half, until Cincinnati FC’s Vázquez, brought on as a substitute just minutes earlier, popped up with a leveller with regulation time almost up.
When Dexter Lembikisa failed to clear a right-wing cross, the ball dropped right to the feet of Vázquez, who slammed home from close range.
What’s next for USMNT and Jamaica?
In their second Group A game, the USMNT will take on St Kitts and Nevis on Wednesday 28 June, with St Louis’s CITYPARK the venue.
Meanwhile, Jamaica head into a matchday-two meeting with Trinidad and Tobago earlier in the day. CITYPARK will also host that clash.
Trinidad and Tobago face St Kitts and Nevis today in the teams’ first group-stage game in Fort Lauderdale.
