Japan and the USWNT know each other well - this evening’s game will be the 43rd meeting between the two teams, the 16th friendly and the second time they have played a three-game series outside of official competition.

The Nadeshiko are one of just three teams to have beaten the United States while Emma Hayes has been in charge - in fact Japan served the coach her first defeat - a 2–1 loss at the SheBelieves Cup in San Diego on February 26, 2025.

I have huge respect for Japan, but we’re a good team,” Hayes told reporters last week. “I want us to demonstrate those things and bring the game to Japan. That’s what I’m most looking forward to, showing our identity on both sides of the ball at a much higher level.”

Hayes named a 26-player roster for the series - including the long-awaited return of forward Sophia Wilson, who has been out on maternity leave, and defender Tierna Davidson, who spent a year on the sidelines recovering from a torn ACL.

Japan head into the series on the back of their recent AFC Women’s Asian Cup triumph in Australia and remain unbeaten in 2026. The Asian champions parted ways with Greenland-born coach Nils Neilsen at the start of the month. His assistant - former U-20s head coach Michihisa Kano will serve as interim coach for these three friendlies and until a new head coach is appointed.
