Valencia-Real Madrid
Valencia fans call for boycott of Real Madrid game at Mestalla
Ancelotti’s men are set to face Valencia on 3 January in a game rearranged after the tragic November flooding.
The first LaLiga game of 2025, sees struggling Valencia face Real Madrid at Mestalla with the match rescheduled due to the original fixture in November being postponed after the torrential floods that devastated the city.
The match will be the first for new Valencia boss Carlos Corberán with the local coach being drafted in to replace Ruben Baraja who was relieved from his role with the team languishing in the relegation zone.
Valencia have only been relegated once in the club’s history (1986) and now, for the first time in over three decades, the club stand on the abyss with the league reaching the halfway point.
Fans anger at owner
Many Valencia fans, for some time now have aimed their dissatisfaction with the way the club has been run at owner, Singapore based businessman Peter Lim.
The 70-year-old took control of the Mestalla based side in 2014 and over the years, Valencia have been transformed from a regular in the Champions League to a team battling to maintain their top flight status.
Fans are angry that money generated from player sales is not being redirected into the team with a rapid turnover in head coaches not permitting any sporting project with a chance to flourish as the club turn to their youth academy as opposed to spending in the transfer market.
Fan-group Libertad VCF also maintain that the club are looking to sell their Mestalla stadium and are in cahoots with local politicians at what they claim is property speculation.
The last few seasons have seen a series of protests against then ownership but with the high profile visit of Real Madrid, the Valencia fan consortium are urging supporters to leave Mestalla empty on 3 January and thus, send a strong message to the millions of worldwide television viewers.
