Rayados have terminated Vucetich’s contract earlier than expected and have already moved to make Ortiz the new man in charge.

A week after Monterrey were knocked out of the Liga MX Clausura 2023 playoffs, Rayados have opted to terminated the contract of head coach Víctor Manuel Vucetich.

Monterrey backtrack on Vucetich decision

In the last seven days, the former Mexico boss has held several meetings with Sporting Chairman José Antonio Noriega and other board members. On Friday 26 May, Noriega claimed that no decision would be made on Vucetich’s future until Monday at the earliest.

However, since then the situation has changed, with the 67-year-old relieved of his duties as Monterrey boss late on Saturday. Vucetich was, of course, first to be informed of the decision, with Rayados later releasing a statement on their social media accounts.

Rayados statement on Vucetich dismissal

“We inform our fans and the media that the club has made the decision to end Víctor Manuel Vucetich’s tenure as the head coach of the Rayados first team.

“We acknowledge and greatly value the historic legacy that Víctor has left us, in terms of titles won, international recognition and records set during his time at the club”.

Monterrey had previously stated that the manner in which Monterrey were eliminated from the Clausura 2023 playoffs by Clásico rivals Tigres (2-1 on aggregate in the semi-finals) was a determining factor in Vucetich leaving the club.

Ex-América boss Ortiz lands in Monterrey

Journalist Diego Armando Medina of TUDN has revealed that ex-Club América boss Fernando Ortiz, who left Las Águilas after their own elimination in the last four to Chivas, is already in Monterrey with his family and due to hold talks to become their new head coach.
