Viral video shows racist insults towards Vinicius Jr. ahead of match in Valencia

A video shows racist insults targeting Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. outside the Valencia stadium, but it’s unclear if the video was doctored.

Update:

The incessant racist attacks towards Brazilian soccer player Vinicius Jr. are not letting up within the league, despite several complaints from players and coaches alike. The Real Madrid winger was subject to racist chants during their game in Valencia at the Mestalla Stadium.

A video has been circulating showing a huge crowd of people all chanting, “Vinicius, you are a monkey” outside of the stadium before the game started as police stand by and do nothing.

However, there are rumors that this video could potentially be doctored, with someone overlaying video from the game in Valencia with audio from a different game. It’s not yet clear whether or not the video is completely truthful.

During the game itself, however, Vinicius confronted one specific fan, who he said was yelling racist abuse. After the game, Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said the entire stadium was chanting racist remarks, not just a few people. To make matters even worse, Vinicius was sent off moments after.

“The Spanish league has a racism problem” -Ancelotti

Vinicius has reported several other incidents of racial abuse to referees and LaLiga and he and Ancelotti both say that the league has done very little to stop it from happening. Vinicius took to social media to say that the league is now racist possibly beyond repair.

Here is a video from a game against Atletico Madrid in which the fans make the same racist chant:

Valencia director Javier Solis refused to admit there was any racism happening, claiming that Ancelotti misheard the chants, that they were actually saying “eres un tonto”, meaning, “you are silly/stupid” rather than “eres un mono”, meaning “you are a monkey”.

Of course, Ancelotti dismissed this right away. “Do you think the referee stopped the game because they shouted ‘tonto’ to Vini? I do not,” he said.

It’s not really important when the racist chanting began. The fact is, it happened, and it’s been happening for a while now, and it is a problem that indeed needs to be solved.
