Wales vs England live online: summary, score & stats | Qatar World Cup 2022

Wales vs England: as it happened

Peep, peep, peeeeeeep!!

FULL TIME! England top the group!

FT: Wales   0-3 England

Wales huffed and puffed but never had anything going for them, really. Kieffer Roberto Francisco Moore was never given enough of the ball because Wales were practically unable to hold onto it for more than 10 seconds, thanks to England's (not particularly impressive) press.

Gareth Bale went missing; Joe Allen injured himself and I thought he was proposing on the pitch; Dan James is sad. Overall, it was a disappointing return to the World's greatest tournament for Wales, who hopefully won't have to wait another 100 years until they're back. When they do come back, however, they'll no doubt want to show more personality on the pitch.

England, for their part, did what they needed to do, so I suppose you can't complain.

But I'm going to.

Wales were dreadful, and England took their time in putting the game out of reach for Wales and their dragon arms. Without Rashford it might have been another bicycle race through porridge alley for Southgate's side, who do their best to make football look like their second favourite sport.

But they're through, and Wales are not, so no complaining for any Three Lions fans. They will face Senegal in the Round of 16. Yum.

Okey dokie, we are going to leave it there!

Thank you for following the coverage of Wales   0-3 England with me (Joe) - it got fun in the end, right?

More football tomorrow on AS:

We've got *checks notes* Saudi Arabia  vs   Mexico (that's with me - woof!) and Poland   vs   Argentina! (double woof!)

Long overdue is right!

In 2006 they had Sweden, Paraguay and Trinidad&Tobago in their group, which was also Group B.

And here is how Opta saw the game:

Quite a dominant second half performance from the Three Lions.

Here is how the two groups have finished:

We've got Netherlands   vs   USA and England vs   Senegal!

Here is how the other game in Group B ended up - check it out!

The Maguire 'shot' will live forever in my memory.

Other than that effort, Maguire was very solid.

I knew they'd come through...

Here are the Sofascore boffins with the key info of tonight's game:

A nice moment for the travelling Welsh fans.

Let's hope it's not 64years until they qualify again...

Confirmation of England's next game:

Senegal! They beat Ecuador today to see them go through second in Group A.

Huge scramble in the Wales box thanks to a great run from Grealish.

Wilson, Foden and Grealish all had shots, all cleared.

Into the last minute.

Wales trying to press, kind of. But it's all a bit sad.

Stones with a shot from a yard out but the bouncing ball is hit over. It came down from a Maguire header from a corner.

Four minutes of added time.

Wilson does excellently to win the ball from the defender close to Ward's goal and wins a corner. Great pressure.

Into the last minute, England look happy to see the game out.

So do Wales.

And just like that! Roberts penalised for a push,

A couple of minutes to go, and we haven't had a foul on Grealish yet...

Kieffer Roberto Francisco Moore receives the ball on the edge of the box but his shot goes high and wide.

Wilson almost slides away like a sneaky snake but Rodon does well to correct his positioning error and touches the ball away from the striker on the halfway line.

Kieffer R F Moore finds himself with the ball on the wing. He looks up to see who he can cross it to but then realises that nobody is there and that he should be in the box. And he can't cross it to himself.

Foul by Maguire on Kieffer Roberto Francisco Moore, just outside the box on the right side. Wilson is stood over it.

Hits the wall.

Stones with a nice switch of play to Grealish, who charges into the opposition box. The ball lands with Bellingham but he's used all his magic up today and loses it.

Allen comes off; Colwill takes his place.

The referee has stopped the play and Joe Allen is on one knee in the middle of the pitch. His night is surely over.

England with 16shots so far; Wales with just 4.

Wilson comes on for James.

Bellingham is slid in down the left side of the box by Wilson. His shot is saved and the rebound finds Foden, but it bounces wide.

Uf. Bellingham with some lovely footwork and quick passing that sees him move England out of a deep area and and away from their own goal *chef's kiss*.

No hat-trick for Rashford today, as he's replaced by Grealish.

England are sitting off Wales now as they pass it around the back. Job done, it seems. Fifteen to go.

England fans are now singing jingle bells.

Rashford looking to make it three!

He receives the ball from Wilson inside the box and his effort is saved by Ward.

The dragon's head was already cut off, but now they've just chopped off its tail.

Wales have been decimated by Rashford's talent. If only they had a winger that could make the difference.

Kalvin Phillips with a typically brilliant long ball to Rashford down the right wing. The forward takes it inside on his left foot, steps over the ball, twisting the blood of the defender, before smashing a shot low and past Danny Ward. A fantastic goal.

This is how things stand in the group:

1. England - 7 points

2. USA - 5 points

3. Iran - 3 points

4. Wales - 1 point

Wales with a spell of possession on the left, but England's press forces them back.

OFF: Shaw

ON: Trippier

Since that Dan James chance, we've had a very stodgy match.

The other score in the group is still Iran    0-1   USA, by the way.

Back on his feet. We're off again.

He's receiving treatment on his ankle. It was a heavy tackle.

Ramsey goes into the book for a foul on Henderson, who screamed very loudly.

OFF: Kane, Walker, Rice

ON: Wilson, Alexander-Arnold, Phillips

England lining up subs. Trent and Wilson to come on.

This is crazy. A long-range shot hits Maguire on the head and Pickford has to scramble to stop the ball from going in and the stadium from probably collapsing.

James gets the ball and whips a shot from the left towards the far post, but it goes wide.

And just like that, England cut the head off the Welsh dragon.

Boom. Two-nil. Wales look completely shell-shocked. And quite rightly.

Long balls immediately being fired into Moore.

Rashford steals the ball as Wales look to build up from the kick off.

It falls to Kane in the right channel and his low ball across the box is metby new boy Foden who slides the ball in the empty net!

Am I taking credit for that? You bet!

Rashford steps up and hits an absolutely wonderful strike into the far corner from the left side. What a fantastic strike.

4 players over the ball... Another synchronised dance?

You know I said that Wales were pressing high? They're not.

Foden makes a run (!) through the middle and is taken down by Rodon on the edge of the box. The perfect place to shoot.

Brennan Johnson gets behind Shaw and the ball is played over to him by Ramsey, but he pushes the left-back and concedes a free-kick.

Wales immediately pressing a lot higher.

Rashford breaks down the right (he's swapped with Foden), but Ward clears.

We're off again!

England kicking from left to right.

God Save The King/boos ring around the stadium.

Brennan Johnson on for... Gareth Bale?

Players in the tunnel - ready to go again!

I'm still waiting on the Sofascore boffins to post the stats, but even they don't want to.

Chesney Hawkes is currently singing with his guitar at the side of the pitch. After that half of sport, we've got Chesney Hawkes. FIFA are really sticking the boot in now.

Kieffer Roberto Francisco Moore hasn't had anything to feed on.

Yes, that is his real full name. Exciting, isn't it?

Now you're going to Google it and say, "ah, it's his Italian grandad", or whatever the reason is.

Peep! Half time!

HT: Wales   0-0 England

You all still with me? I know Wales haven't had a chance, but they need to keep themselves in the game. England are practically through: they could play 30 attackers and score 1,000 goals and it would all be fine - so why don't they look like they want to?

Apart from the Rashford chance, Wales have funnelled (there is no fun pun in this game) England out wide, where Shaw and Rashford and co. have been quickly pressed.

But then Wales decide they wouldn't like the ball (well, everyone except Dan James, who hasn't had a choice either way) and just give it back to Maguire and Stones to play sideways passes.

Unless something really amazing happens in the second half, my prediction of this match being the third most entertaining game of football in the entire history of the sport was a bit off.

Wales have a chance!

Joe Allen hits a shot from the edge of the box with his left foot... but it swerves wide.

Foden loops it to Maguire (obviously) at the far post, and his header is arched back towards where it came from. Ward catches.

Shaw puts in a low cross into the box but Wales do well to block.

Kane gets on the ball as it is hoofed out; his shot bobbles out for a corner.

Five minutes added on.

Half a chance for Maguire who receives the ball on the edge of the box, but Shaw gets in the way.

Maguire holds his arms out, annoyed, like he would've definitely scored it.

Here is how Group B looks at the moment:

1. England (no flag on my system, boo) 5 points

2. USA   5 points

3. Iran   3 points

4. Wales   2 points

IRAN    0-1   USA (Pulisic)

Another chance for England! My hands can't type this quickly!

A counter attack in a flash: Foden, Kane linked up and raced towards goal before playing it out to Rashford, whose cross was blocked.

If I'm out of breath, I can't imagine the Welsh players.

The cross came from Henderson on the right; Rashford went for the spectacular effort, but it flew wide.

Now Wales try their luck - but England cut it out!

A bit of ping-pong football

Beautifully worked down the right from Bellingham, who plays it inside the box to Foden.

The Manchester City winger spins around with the ball and hits a shot over the bar.

OFF: Williams

ON: Roberts

Looks like Williams can't continue...

Roberts to come on.

England have taken a step up and Foden has started to get involved. How he makes a difference.

He gives the team a spark they definitely didn't have against the USA.

Harry Maguire! I'm laughing here...

The poor lad takes the ball and runs with all his might towards the goal, lines up for the shot with his left foot... and smacks it out for a throw-in on the other side.

England probing in the middle channel... trying to find a way through.

Dan James gets upset that none of his friends have passed him the ball and he crashes into John Stones. Yellow card, which won't cheer him up.

A huge scream from Henderson after the ball goes out. I have no idea why.

Wales with some possession on the left, but they're yet to create anything.

Back underway after a nice little interlude.

Williams tries to play it long to Moore but his touch bounces out of play.

And now someone has found an air horn. Delightful.

God Save The King rings out; a chorus of boos promptly follow.

Williams is down after taking a hit to the head from a free-kick scramble.

Some quicker combinations from England, who work the ball out to the left.

Shaw whips a cross into the far post to Henderson, who is absolutely on his own. Unfortunately, the ball is crossed in towards his chest/head and Henderson decides to use neither, instead jumping like a sea lion and watching t float out for a throw.

Wales holding off in their mid-block, but Stones and Maguire pretty much having no pressure put on them, which is making build-up incredibly slow.

Free kick for England, about 25 yards out on the left side of the pitch.

Henderson puts the cross in after a synchronised swimming move from about 4 players, who dummied, passed and spun around before the ball floated out for a goal kick.

And I thought Rashford was going to take it and smack it in the top corner.

Foden tries to dance between three Welsh defenders and loses the ball.

England instantly win it back, adding to their 72% possession they've had so far.

Gareth Southgate has just stood up, shouted "come on, guys", and sat back down.

If that doesn't get the blood pumping, nothing will.

Free kick on the left wing for England after a handball. Bale is marking Kane. Shaw over the ball.

Moore clears to new boy Foden, whose shot is well wide.

Nobody has passed the ball to poor little Dan James yet.

England have woken up!

Another attempt at putting the ball in the box, this time from the right side.

Wales clear. They can't let England have this much dominance.

Kane took the ball and slipped away like a slimy dolphin before playing Rashford through the gap between the two Welsh centre-backs, but Ward got off his line well.

Something like an attempt at build-up for Wales now; they found a bit of space with the ball in their own half behind England's midfield, but they decided to kick it out of play. It wasn't anything, really.

England, unlike Wales who are happy to sit off in their defensive shape, are going man-to-man off the ball, forcing Page's team to play long.

Luke Shaw forgets he's not playing for Manchester United and throws the ball to a red shirt.

Wales are set up defensively in a 4-4-2 with Moore and Ramsey highest. They're happy for England to have the ball at the back, but every time Southgate's side pass backwards, Wales creep forward.

The Welsh fans are making *a lot* of noise.

Interestingly, Rashford has started on the left, with Foden on the right.

England with some early possession, happy to horseshoe it around the defence. Yay.

It's a back four for both teams.

We've had two throw-ins, five headers and three long balls in the first 43 seconds.

Peep goes the whistle - we are go!

Wales in Red shirts, white shorts and red socks; England in white, navy, white.

Ramsey kicks us off from left to right after the two teams take the knee.

Anyway, niceties over - time to go!

The players are walking out of the tunnel and onto the pitch.

Time for the national anthems! (this is going to be loud)

Wales: Spine-tingling. Such an emotional moment for Wales. Bale didn't hold back.

England: Come on, Phil, you've not played all tournament and you sing like that? Top marks for Southgate, must've been practicing in the mirror all week

The huge World Cup trophy is in the middle of the pitch... time for the light show and the fireworks before the teams come out.

15 minutes to go!

The players are finishing their warmups and are about to head inside for the team talks!

Almost time to see Wales vs England at the World Cup - for the first time ever!

Joe's match preview:

Muscles are being stretched and balls are flying into the goals from all angles. All the players look sharp.

I expect Wales to come flying out of the blocks and try to test Dan James against Harry Maguire from the off. The ex-Leeds United man will inject a burst of pace into the side and even if he doesn't cause direct damage, the option for him to squirm behind enemy lines will always be an option.

Bale is Bale. And at the end of the day, if anyone on the Wales team is going to step up in the crucial moment, it is the LAFC man. He might not be able to run anymore, and his hair might look greasier than a bacon sandwich, but he has the mentality to pull off special moments on the biggest occasions

As for England (no flag), I expect people to just be happy to see Phil Foden in the XI. And he should be happy, too. Like a kid who finally wins something at sports day in primary school.

He will give the team the unpredictability that everyone craved in the 0-0 draw against the USA last week (here's the match report, feast your eyes).

It wasn't the most exciting game of football we have ever seen, so hopefully we are in for more of a tasty football treat today.

The England players are out on the pitch for their warm-up session!

Kalvin Phillips is all smiley and lovely, as always.

Home kits for both sides tonight

Given Wales are the home side, England are in their curious looking white and blue shirt. What are your thoughts on it?

Not long to go until the teams are out on the pitch!

And here is how The Dragons line up!

James, Moore and Bale start up top with Ramsey and Allen behind.

The England team is in!

Foden starts alongside Rashford!

An interesting stat from Miguel Delaney:

Here's Group B, as things stand:

A 4-0 win for Wales is currently at about 500/1...

Barns-zilian John Stones

Who knew that Barnsley-born John Stones actually had the footwork of a Brazilian winger? Not me!

If you don't know where Barnsley is, check it out. It's similar to Brazil in many ways.

Everybody say it with me... "thank you, David, for doing the difficult job of working out all the Group B permutations so I don't have to."

Team news, part 2

Now, England (I don't have an England flag on the system, so sorry to all the vexillologists who come for the flag fun):

No injuries for Southgate's side, apart from Ben White, who has been ill. We'll see if he features.

Also, the news coming from the whispers around the stadium is that Phil Foden is set to start for the Three Lions, so let's see if the rumours are to be believed...

Team news

Wales  are up first!

So, Wayne Hennessey has been a naughty boy (not for the first time) and he's serving a suspension; it will probably be Danny Ward of Leicester City who will take his place

There are no injuries, so that's about it for Wales and Rob Page, who's biggest concern is whether he's going to start with Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey, who have been largely anonymous so far in the tournament.

Goooood morning, good afternoon and good evening!

I’ll be your host for the (simultaneous) last game in Group B; it’s Joe here for yet more football on AS USA.

Yes, we really have got all the football.

My, oh my, look what we have here, it’s Wales against…*checks notes*… England!

Now, remember you can flick over to the other channel on your screen and watch all the action in the fascinating game between Iran and the USA
