Inter Miami’s clash with Chicago Fire at Hard Rock Stadium got off to the worst possible start for the home side after goalkeeper Rocco Ríos Novo committed one of the biggest blunders of the MLS season, handing the visitors a bizarre opening goal.
The Argentine goalkeeper received a routine back pass from a defender and looked set to clear the danger. Instead, he completely misjudged his clearance attempt, swinging at the ball but failing to make sufficient contact. The ball rolled on and into the net, leaving Ríos Novo stunned as Chicago Fire celebrated an unlikely opener.
The goal was officially recorded as an own goal by the Inter Miami goalkeeper.
Ríos Novo’s error puts Inter Miami behind
The mistake immediately gave Chicago Fire a 1-0 advantage and silenced the home crowd. It was a costly lapse for Ríos Novo, whose attempted clearance turned into a nightmare moment that is certain to feature among the league’s most memorable goalkeeping errors.
Chicago continued to threaten after taking the lead, capitalizing on the momentum created by the early gift.

The game also marked Robert Lewandowski’s debut for Chicago Fire, and although the Polish striker was making his first appearance for the club, it was Dithejane who doubled the visitors’ lead in the 67th minute with a composed finish from inside the penalty area.
Inter Miami fought back thanks to veteran striker Luis Suárez. The Uruguayan produced a brace to lead the Herons’ comeback, scoring twice to erase the deficit and keep his team in the contest after the disastrous opening own goal.
Despite Ríos Novo’s unforgettable mistake, Suárez ensured Inter Miami remained competitive in a game that quickly developed into a high-scoring MLS battle.
