Weston McKennie continues incredible Champions League record
The Juventus man has been in incredible form in European competition and is close to signing a new contract.
The Weston McKennie renaissance in Italy continued on Wednesday with another goal-scoring performance from the USMNT midfielder. McKennie scored Juventus’ third goal as the Italian giants fought back from a three-goal deficit in their Champions League playoff game against Galatasary.
Juventus went down to ten men early in the second half but still managed to fight back to level the game at 3-3 on aggregate. It was McKennie’s goal which forced the game to extra-time but Galatasaray made the one-man advantage count and secured passage to the next round.
Despite that disappointment McKennie has now scored four goals in his last six Champions League games, an incredible return from a midfielder. His recent form has proved his importance to Juventus head coach Luciano Spalletti and he he is close to signing a new deal with the Turin club.
McKennie has been a valuable utility piece for Juventus this year, featuring as a full-back, winger and even a makeshift forward at times. But it is in the center of midfield that McKennie is most comfortable and he is set to be a key part of the United States team for this summer’s World Cup.
The 27-year-old has racked up 62 caps for the senior US national team and has featured extensively under Mauricio Pochettino in the last 18 months. Barring any injuries, McKennie should be one of the first names on the team sheet for Pochettino this summer and his performances in the Champions League show that he has the quality to impact games at the very highest level.
