The departure of Fernando Ortíz from Club América has freed up one of the most pretigious jobs in Mexican football and possibly across the entire American continent. Less than a week after ‘Tano’ said goodbye to the team, the candidates to replace him have not stopped popping up like a game of Whac-a-mole.

Javier Aguirre is one of the names that been mentioned heavily across social media and it was ‘El Vasco’ himself who responded to the rumours that put him on the lips of the América fanbase: “I need to focus on my team, really. I’m not going to spend one iota of energy on other things and I will focus on what worries me. I don’t want to see my team as I saw them against Almería: unrecognisable, disorganised, without any ideas. We tried to improve with five changes, but there was no way to do it.”

Which other managers have been linked to the Club América job?

“Almería beat us, they were much better. They had four shouts on goal and scored three. We all have to reflect and focus on our work to give a good image of ourselves to our fans,” the Mexican said at his recent press conference.

On the other hand, TUDN reported that the ex-Uruguay boss Diego Alonso and current coach of Atlético San Luis, André Jardine, are two of the main candidates to take over the reins of América. Alonso is a free man after being replaced by Marcelo Bielsa as manager of Uruguay, while Jardine has a release clause which allows him to leave Atlético San Luis.

Finally, in terms of further exits, it has been confirmed that Roger Martínez will leave the club as a free agent and Jurgen Damn would follow him. In addition, Fox Sports pointed out that 23-year-old defender Sebastián Cáceres is on the verge of trying his luck in European football.
