Tuesday 22 October brings us a repeat of the 2024 Champions League final as runners up Borussia Dortmund arrive in the Spanish capital to face perennial winners Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu. It’s Matchday 3 in the new look UEFA competition and the Bundesliga team will be hoping to cause an upset, something that proved impossible back in June.

Edin Terzić's side went into the final as clear underdogs with European Cup specialists Madrid going on to claim an incredible fifteenth triumph in the top continental tournament, with goals from Carvajal and Vinicius securing Old Big Ears. To be fair, few expected the Germans to reach the Wembley showpiece, but they overcame Atletico Madrid and PSG on their way to Wembley.

Despite Real Madrid being favourites once again, Dortmund know that the pressure is on for them to perform. The team is currently in 7th place in the Bundesliga but has started their European adventure on fire. A 3-0 away win against Brugge was followed by a 7-1 battering of Scottish champions Celtic in front of their home fans. The Yellow Wall will not be with them tonight, but a night at the Bernabéu is always special.

Why are Dortmund known as BVB?

Many observers will have noticed that the Borussia Dortmund club crest boasts the letters BVB with no reference to Dortmund in the acronym and these three letters are far from a straightforward abbreviation of the club’s name.

This shortened name comes from the full club title, which is ‘Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund.’ Breaking this down into English, it translates as: ‘Ball game club – Borussia – 1909 – registered association – Dortmund’. The latter part of the name refers to the city the club is situated in, while the ‘09′ section indicates the club was founded in 1909.
