The scandal engulfing RFEF president Luis Rubiales has sparked fresh debate in Spain and continues to make global news.

Rubiales remains suspended from FIFA pending an investigation and the heads of the regional bodies that make up the Spanish football federation are demanding that he resign. Nevertheless, Rubiales insists that he will remain in the role.

Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz progressed past Dominik Koepfer in the 2023 US Open on Tuesday and was asked to comment on the Rubiales situation. After his victory Alcaraz spoke to ABC’s Javier Ansorena about the issue that has captivated Spain.

What did Carlos Alcaraz say about Luis Rubiales?

Alcaraz is in New York for the US Open, a tournament that he won last year and is looking to retain. However even mid-competition the 20-year-old is being asked for his take on the Rubiales controversy.

“I have followed the matter, obviously it is something that has given rise to a lot of talk,” he explained. “And much more so in Spain.”

“We are here [in New York] and we do not know everything that has happened, but the fact that the story has reached here tells you how big it is,” he continued.

Speaking directly about Rubiales, Alcaraz said that his behaviour and response to the scandal has not be appropriate for the president of RFEF.

“In my opinion, these are attitudes that senior people should not display,” Alcaraz said.

Above all else, Alcaraz said that he hopes that the situation can be resolved swiftly so the focus can return to the victorious Spain team. The Spanish side beat European champions England in the final to lift the Women’s World Cup for the first time.

Alcaraz said: “Hopefully it gets fixed soon as the women’s team has made a historic achievement and it has not received much credit. It’s a shame.”
