The fate of both Real Madrid and Liverpool has been decided in the Champions League draw: the two old foes will face each other again in the most prestigious European club competition.

The last time both teams collided was back in the 2022/23 Champions League round of 16. In the first leg, held at a raucous Anfield, Liverpool went quickly 2-0 up. However, the party only lasted a few minutes, as the Spaniards drew level before halftime and scored three more goals in the second half to trash their rivals with a 5-2 win.

In the second leg at the Bernabéu, Real Madrid gave the coup de grâce to the English club with a 1-0 win.

Has Kylian Mbappé ever scored against Liverpool?

With Kylian Mbappé adding to Madrid’s attacking threat, Los Blancos are more than prepared to show Anfield why they are the reigning champions. The game comes as an opportunity for the Frenchman to show his class - and he already knows what it’s like to score at the Reds’ stadium. He did it in the 2018/19 season, but PSG fell 3-2 with a late goal from Firmino’s sealing the result for the home side.

Real Madrid’s record against Liverpool

Curiously, Liverpool had the first laugh against Real Madrid. The first clash came in the 1980/81 European Cup final in Paris, back before the Champions League format as we know it today had started. Alan Kennedy scored the game’s only goal in the dying minutes to give Liverpool their third European title.

However, Real Madrid can boast about winning the last two Champions League finals against the English outfit. The first time came in the 2017/18 edition, where two unforgettable Loris Karius mistakes (and a sublime bale overhead kick) helped Zinedine Zidane’s team lift their third trophy in a row; the second win came in the 2021/22 final, with Vinícius Jr. scoring the only goal in a game that saw Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois come away with the MVP award after a stunning display in front of goal.

As for the general record, Real Madrid come out on top. Across the 11 matches played, Los Blancos have defeated their rivals seven times, while Liverpool have won three. There has been only one draw: during the 2020/21 Champions League quarterfinal second leg at Anfield, Éder Militão and Nacho put in an outstanding defensive display and kept the Reds at bay. What’s more, Real Madrid have scored 17 goals against their rivals, conceding just 10 times.
