Nestor Lorenzo’s El Tri were not the only Colombian stars on show at Sunday’s Copa América final. Singer-songwriter Shakira was also in attendance to perform at the halftime show, the first of its kind in Copa América history.

“Shakira is an extraordinary South American star who has dazzled the entire world. Her songs are sung and danced to in every corner of the planet, turning her art into a global phenomenon that crosses borders and is enjoyed by millions of people,” CONMEBOL president Alejandro Domínguez said ahead of the final. “We are sure that her performance at the CONMEBOL Copa América USA 2024 will enhance the message of healthy passion and unity through sport.”

Shakira stars at World Cups and Super Bowl

She may be the first person to perform at a Copa América final but Shakira has plenty of experience at these big sporting events.

She performed ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ at the final of the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Berlin and was enlisted to provide the official song of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. ‘Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)’ became the most commercially successful official World Cup song of all time and Shakira performed it at both the opening and closing ceremony.

She also sang the official anthem, not to be confused with the official song, at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. She made her third World Cup appearance while performing her song ‘La La La (Brazil 2014)’ with Brazilian artist Carlinhos Brown at the closing ceremony.

She has also taken centre stage in the United Stage, appearing alongside Jennifer Lopez at the Super Bowl LIV Halftime Show in 2020. The performance draw a an audience of 103 million viewers and it was, at that point, the most watched Super Bowl Halftime Show on YouTube. It even received critical acclaim, picking up four Primetime Emmy nominations and winning the Premios Nuestra Tierra award for Best Live or TV or Virtual Performance. That year’s performance was designed to represent the Latin culture of host city Miami, which is also the venue of the 2024 Copa América final.
