What is the arc at the top of the penalty box for in soccer? Function and distance of “the D”
The curved line at the edge of the penalty area has a simple job, but many fans never realize what it actually does or why it matters.
For those of us who have been watching soccer for as long as we can remember, there are plenty of things about the sport that feel second nature and rarely get a second thought.
Why is each team made up of 11 players? Who decided how big the ball is? Why is there a D shape on the edge of the penalty area?
The last of those three questions is the perfect example of something we never think twice about when watching or playing a game. But what purpose does it actually serve?
Well, it turns out it has a very specific one, and it only comes into play in a small percentage of moments during a match. In fact, in most soccer games, you could remove the D and it would make almost no difference at all.
What the D on the penalty area actually is
The D is officially known as the penalty arc, which already gives a big clue as to its purpose.
When a penalty is taken, all players apart from the taker must remain at least 10 yards from the penalty spot. If the arc were not there, both defenders and attackers could potentially position themselves closer than allowed if they are standing just outside the penalty area in central positions.
Why the penalty arc exists
Every point along the curve of the penalty arc is exactly 10 yards from the penalty spot. That allows referees to quickly and consistently judge the required distance between the ball and all other players during a penalty kick.
In short, it is a built-in measuring tool to help enforce one of soccer’s simplest but most important rules.
What is ‘encroachment’?
If players are less than 10 yards away when the ball is struck, they are, in theory, penalized for encroachment, although it is often not enforced strictly in practice.
If an attacking player encroaches and their teammate scores, the penalty must be retaken. The same applies if a defensive player encroaches and the goalkeeper saves the penalty.
