Gerardo Martino stepped down as manager of the Mexican team shortly after the final whistle blew in Qatar as his men put in a very positive performance beating Saudi Arabia 2-1. It wasn’t enough and, on goal difference, Poland progress in their place

It was a tense ending to Wednesday’s World Cup fixtures, with a long period near the end when a single goal in either Mexico’s match or that of Argentina vs Poland. As it turned out, for the first time since 1978 El Tri fail to make it to the knockout stage.
