Real Madrid have finally confirmed the signing of Jude Bellingham, who becomes the highest-profile arrival at the club so this summer following the returns of Fran García and Brahim Díaz from Rayo Vallecano and Milan respectively. The move for the England star is another step in the process of freshening up Los Blancos’ midfield, with Fede Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga and Aurélien Tchouaméni previously coming in to assist and eventually replace Luka Modric and Toni Kroos.

It’s taken some time and they’ve had to shell out top dollar but Madrid have finally got their man. And mainly thanks to Borussia Dortmund’s status as a listed company on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, details of the deal between the German club and Los Merengues are public knowledge, with neither club able to ‘manipulate’ the figures involved, as often happens.

For instance, when Madrid claimed they had sold Álvaro Morata to Chelsea for €80 million in 2017, while the Blues said they had paid just €64 million. Mind games in the complex world of transfer market poker.

How much could Real Madrid end up paying for Bellingham?

We know, therefore, that Madrid have spent €103 million ($111.3 million) to acquire the services of Bellingham and will pay Dortmund an extra 30% (€30.9 million, $33.5 million) if certain objectives are met. That would see the transfer fee rise to a maximum of €133.9 million ($145 million).

Jude Bellingham’s contract details at Real Madrid

On top of that, Bellingham has signed a six-year contract worth a reported €20 million (circa $21.7 million) per season, which comes to €120 million ($130 million). All in all, the deal could cost Madrid in excess of €250 million ($270 million).

What objectives could be included in the deal?

Dortmund informed the Frankfurt Stock Exchange that the aforementioned objectives were related both to the player individually and Real Madrid as a club. These, however, weren’t specified, although standard practice dictates that half of the 30% add-on fee depends on Bellingham’s performances (appearances, goals, assists, trophies won) and the other half on Madrid’s success (league titles, Champions League qualification, Champions League victories).

How much will Bellingham earn after tax?

Although we can’t be completely certain about exactly how much Bellingham will earn in Madrid, reports in Germany suggest that, as mentioned, he has signed a six-year deal worth €20 million (around $21.7 million) per season, which drops to €10 million (over $10.8 million) after tax.

Despite not turning 20 until later in June, that places Bellingham alongside Modric, Kroos, Vinicius Júnior, Thibaut Courtois and David Alaba in the group of the club’s highest earners following the departures of Eden Hazard and Karim Benzema, who had been the top two.
