Columbus Crew secured their place in next month’s CONCACAF Champions Cup final for the first time in history after beating Monterrey 1-3 at BBVA stadium on Wednesday. The second semi-final ended with an aggregate score of 2-5 as the MLS side also won the first leg 2-1. Awaiting Wilfried Nancy’s team in the final will be five-time winners Pachuca, who brushed past Liga MX rivals América to book their place.

Final coincides with elections

Originally, the final had been scheduled to take place on 2 June at a venue to be defined - presumably it will be at Estadio Hidalgo - Pachuca’s stadium, as they have the superior record during the course of the tournament. However, it is possible that the final between Los Tuzos and the Crew could be played elsewhere on an alternative date as the presidential elections in Mexico will be held on the same day.

Pachuca's Concacaf Champions Cup triumphs

  • 2002 Morelia 0-1 Pachuca
  • 2007 Guadalajara 2-2 Pachuca
  • 2008 Saprissa 2-3 Pachuca
  • 2009-10 Cruz Azul 2-2 Pachuca
  • 2016-17 UANL 1-2 Pachuca

This is the Columbus Crew’s fifth participation in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. In all four of the previous editions, they were eliminated at the quarter final stage, losing to: Morelia (2003), Toluca (2010), Real Salt Lake (2011) and Monterrey (2021)

CONCACAF has several days to define where and when the final will take place as Pachuca go in search of a sixth title. The game is crucially important for both teams because they are the sole survivors from their respective Leagues.

América was eliminated by the Tuzos by an aggregate score of 3-2. André Jardine fielded a side comprising mainly young players to reserve his stars for the Play-In clash against Pumas on Thursday night.
