Spain has now become the most successful team in the history of the European Championship and the first to win the tournament by winning every match – Croatia, Italy, Albania, Georgia, Germany, France and England. And this achievement also comes with another reward.

How the Euros and Copa América were decided:

In the Euro 24 final on Sunday, Spain and England competed not only for the continental trophy and the prestige that comes with it, but also for a lesser-known prize. The winner of the match secured a spot in the Finalissima, a tournament that will take place in 2025.

What is the Finalissima?

The Finalissima is a match that pits the winner of the Copa América against the team that triumphs in the European Championship. Argentina, having reclaimed the American tournament title, will also aim to retain the Finalissima title that they previously won against Italy.

This event is part of an agreement between CONMEBOL and UEFA, who have expanded their collaboration to create projects involving both organisations. This cooperation includes women’s football, futsal, youth categories, and even the exchange of referees (as occurred in both competitions), as well as shared technical training.

When is Finalissima 2025 played?

There is no fixed date yet for the 2025 Finalissima. The last edition was played in London in June 2022, so it is likely that the next one will be scheduled between June and July 2025. The venue for the event has also not been decided yet.

What happened in past editions of Finalissima?

The tournament was first held in 1985, with France, the winner of the 1984 European Championship, facing Uruguay, the 1983 Copa América champion. The match ended with a 2-0 victory for the French.

After that initial edition, the competition was not seen again until 1993, under the name Copa Artemio Franchi. That year, Argentina hosted a match against Denmark, who failed to secure a victory for Europe as a certain Diego Maradona helped his team to the win. In the 2022 Finalissima, Argentina once again emerged victorious, this time against Italy.
