Megan Rapinoe is regarded as one of the prominent figures in the United States women’s national football team. This recognition is not solely based on her on-field achievements but also for her significant role in the well-known ‘Equal Pay’ campaign with US Soccer. Therefore, her departure from the national squad of the Stars and Stripes garners considerable attention.

‘Pinoe’ will play her final match wearing the national team jersey on Sunday, 24 September, during a historic week for the USWNT.

On Thursday, 21 September, it was Julie Ertz’s turn to say farewell, the iconic defender who won two World Cups with the United States. In light of this, the 38-year-old Californian was not called up, to allow Ertz the deserved adulation.

Which team is Rapinoe’s final opponent?

As already stated, Rapinoe’s farewell will take place this Sunday, when she and her teammates will face the South African national team, just as Ertz did on Thursday. It is a challenging opponent that managed to qualify for the Round of 16 in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia-New Zealand.

In contrast to Ertz, Rapinoe will bid farewell at Chicago’s Soldier Field, where a large turnout is anticipated to bid farewell to one of the great figures of the women’s national team.

“People might think that the end of my career would bring sadness, but when I think about the last 30 years playing this sport, my predominant emotions are joy and gratitude,” Rapinoe said in the U.S. Soccer statement announcing her retirement.
