Spain and Stuttgart: A special connection
Spain will play their semifinal against France in Stuttgart on June 5, a venue that brings fond memories for La Roja. Just last year, Mikel Merino’s dramatic extra-time goal in this very stadium sent Germany crashing out in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals.
Germany vs Portugal will kick off the tournament on June 4, while the final will take place at Allianz Arena on June 8.
Can Spain defend their title?
Spain are looking to retain their Nations League crown, having won the 2023 final against Croatia on penalties. No team has been more consistent in the competition, as La Roja remain the only nation to have finished as both champions (2023) and runners-up (2021).
Three of the Nations League winners to date – Portugal (2019), France (2021), and Spain (2023) – will all compete in this year’s Final Four. Meanwhile, the Netherlands have been less fortunate, finishing as runners-up once (2019) and in fourth place another time (2023).
The honor roll of the Nations League also includes:
- Italy (two third-place finishes: 2021, 2023)
- England (third place in 2019)
- Switzerland & Belgium (fourth place finishes in 2019 and 2021, respectively)

Yes, the Nations League has always included a third-place match since its inception.
- Italy has won the bronze medal twice, beating Belgium (2021) and the Netherlands (2023).
- England finished third in 2019 after defeating Switzerland on penalties.
This year, the third-place match will take place on June 8 before the final kicks off at 8:45 p.m.
