The Champions League final has been a very tight affair in recent years, with the four finals from 2020 to 2023 all ending in a 1-0 scoreline. However, they were all settled in 90 minutes, with four different clubs (Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester City) emerging victorious.

Atlético Madrid suffer at the hands of Real Madrid

Los Blancos, however, were involved in last Champions League final that went to a penalty shootout, and the last two which went to extra time. City rivals Atlético Madrid were their opponents on both occasions (and we all remember how things ended for Diego Simeone’s team).

In 2014, Atleti looked to heading for their first victory in the competition, only for Sergio Ramos equaliser deep into stoppage time before Gareth Bale, Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo all netted in extra-time.

Two years later, things were even more heartbreaking for the red-and-white side of Madrid. After an evenly-contested final in Milan, veteran defender Juanfran was the only man to miss in the shootout, giving Real Madrid their second Champions League win over three years.
