Update:

After the second round of the NCAA Tournament came to an end on Sunday, there are just 16 men’s basketball teams remaining. Of those teams who punched their ticket to the Sweet 16, seven are SEC teams - an NCAA Tournament record.

SEC sets NCAA Tournament record

The SEC’s seven teams to make it to the Sweet 16 this year are Ole Miss, Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Florida. The record surpasses the previous record of six teams set by the ACC in 2016.

The SEC teams in the Sweet 16 range from No. 1 seeds to a No. 10 seed. This comes after the SEC won the most bids (14) in NCAA Tournament history as well.

The SEC has two No. 1 seeds still in the tournament, two No. 2 seeds, and a No. 3 seed. They have the chance to make more history as March Madness continues. The record of conference teams in the Elite Eight was set by the ACC in 2016 as well with four teams making it to that stage. Two made it to the Final Four, but an AAC team didn’t win the championship that year. The SEC could break the record in the Elite Eight, and set itself apart by having one of its teams win the NCAA title.
