WOMEN'S WORLD CUP 2023
When were Brazil last eliminated in Women’s World Cup group stage?
The Brazilians suffered a shock Women’s World Cup exit on Wednesday, finishing third in Group F after being held to a goalless draw by Jamaica.
Brazil have suffered their first group-stage exit at a Women’s World Cup for nearly 30 years, after As Canarinhas were surprisingly dumped out of the tournament by Jamaica on Wednesday.
Appearing at only their second Women’s World Cup, the Jamaicans held Brazil to a 0-0 matchday-three draw to take second in Group F ahead of the South Americans, who are currently 35 places higher in the FIFA world rankings. France secured top spot in the group with a 6-3 win over Panama.
Brazil out in group stage for first time since ‘95
Brazil have qualified for every Women’s World Cup since the competition’s inception in 1991 - and had reached the knockout stages in their last six appearances at the finals.
Before 2023, the only previous occasions on which the Seleção had gone out in the group phase were the first two Women’s World Cups. Brazil were beaten to quarter-final qualification by the US and Sweden in 1991, before coming bottom of their section four years later, behind Germany, Sweden and Japan.
In the three World Cups that followed their early elimination in 1995, the Brazilians twice finished on the podium, taking third place in 1999 and reaching the final in 2007. In the trophy decider 16 years ago in Shanghai, they missed out on their first world title when they lost 2-0 to Germany.
That 2007 run to the final was the last time that Brazil won a knockout game at a Women’s World Cup, however. After going out in the last eight in 2011 - when the tournament featured 16 teams - the eight-time Copa América winners suffered consecutive round-of-16 exits in 2015 and 2019.
Who do Jamaica face in the Women’s World Cup round of 16?
Having out-qualified Brazil to make the Women’s World Cup knockout stages for the first time, Jamaica will face the winners of Group H in the round of 16. As things stand, that will be a Linda Caicedo-inspired Colombia, although Germany are also in contention to top the section.
Mathematically, Morocco can also still win Group H, but the North Africans will need to pull off a huge goal-difference swing to leapfrog both Colombia and Germany.
Jamaica’s last-16 tie is to be played on Tuesday 8 August at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 4 a.m. ET/1 a.m. PT.
Viewers in the US will be able to stream the game live online on fuboTV, which offers users a free trial.
