When will Roger Martínez’s Club América departure be announced?

Colombian forward Martínez is set to leave América after five years in Mexico City, but will report for pre-season training this week.

As the Club América board continues the search for a new head coach, the squad’s preparations for the Apertura 2023 tournament are getting underway. One of the players who will report for pre-season this week is Roger Martínez; AS México has confirmed that the Colombian forward will continue to train with Las Águilas until his contract expires on 30 June.

Martínez weighing up where to go next

Martínez, who has been at América since 2018, has attracted interest from a number of clubs, both in the Liga MX and overseas. Ahead of an official announcement of the 28-year-old’s departure, he and his advisers remain in the process of deciding on his next move.

Nicknamed ‘the Tank’, Martínez made a total of 21 appearances for América in the 2022/23 Liga MX season, scoring four goals and supplying just two assists. In the Clausura 2023 tournament, he played 12 times but was restricted to just one start.

Since arriving at América, Martínez has appeared 163 times in all competitions for the Mexico City side. He has scored 35 goals and provided 17 assists. Earlier, he had played for Racing de Avellaneda, Santamarina and Aldosivi in Argentina, as well as Chinese club Jiangsu Suning and Spaniards Villarreal.
