Where next for Thomas Tüchel?

Thomas Tüchel hasn’t forgotten about either the Premier League or London. The German coach had to leave the United Kingdom last month, due to post-Brexit visa migration laws. He found himself without a project - even the possibility of taking the England job failed to materialise when Gareth Southgate committed to continue until Euro 2024. But despite not being able to stay in the UK until he finds employment, Tüchel is closely following the situation of the clubs in the English capital - Tottenham in particular.

Conte’s future

According to London-based newspaper The Evening Standard, “Tüchel would be open to an offer from Spurs”. Spurs are currently fifth in the table but the team’s recent results have been anything but consistent. Media reports go to claim that Antonio Conte could leave when his contract expires in June. The Standard report that the Italian coach “has systematically refused to commit to Spurs beyond the end of the season.” Tottenham have an option to activate a 12-month extension to Conte’s contract. However, if the Italian decides to leave, Tüchel would be interested in taking charge of the team.

Learning the lingo

Of course Spurs wouldn’t be the only club who might be looking for a new manager between now and the summer and Tüchel isn’t closing any doors. Apparently, the former Chelsea coach has taken an intensive course of Spanish classes, to broaden his horizons. Although the German stated that he “liked living in London”, ex-Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is also one of the candidates for the position and could return if Conte’s position were to become vacant in the coming months. For now, Tüchel is keeping his options open, whether in the Premier League or perhaps LaLiga - for the moment when the former Chelsea manager “is ready to return to football and willing to listen to the proposals of major clubs...”
