UEFA has accepted the request of Turkey and Italy to join forces in their intention to host the 2032 Euros, instead of separately. The move definitively clarifies the panorama of where the 2028 edition of the tournament will be held. UEFA’s acceptance implies that Turkey effectively renounce running for the 2028 event, for which they were also bidding. It leaves the United Kingdom/Ireland as the only candidate. Thus, Euro 2028 will go to UK/Ireland and Euro 2032 to the Turks and Italians jointly. Next week, on Tuesday 10th, it will be made official.

Turkey pull out

UEFA confirmed Turkey’s withdrawal in a statement, which read: “Further to the announcement on 28 July which revealed the desire of the Italian and Turkish FAs to submit a joint bid to stage Uefa Euro 2032, the UEFA administration has today written to both associations to confirm that their joint bid has been duly received and will go forward for assessment and consideration by the UEFA Executive Committee. As indicated by the FA of Türkiye with its submission of the request for a joint bid, their bid to stage Uefa Euro 2028 is consequently withdrawn. The award of both tournaments still requires the approval of the executive committee at its meeting in Nyon on 10 October. The presentations at that meeting will be an important part of the process which will take due consideration of the content of the bid submissions before reaching a decision”.

When was the last time the UK/Ireland staged the Euros?

England staged the 1996 tournament - the 10th edition. The hosts made it as far as the semi-finals only to be knocked out, on penalties, by Germany. Euro 2028 will be the first time that neighbouring countries, Scotland, Ireland, Northern Ireland and Wales have hosted the competition.

The next edition of the tournament, Euro 2024, will be played in Germany. More than 1.2 million tickets will be available in the application period from Monday 3 October to Thursday 26 October 2023.
