Real Madrid go up against CA Osasuna today in the final of the Copa del Rey (KO 4pm ET). It is one of the most prestigious games in Spanish football, and will be a historic night for whichever team walks away with the famous trophy. However, as often happens with tournament finals, the question of just who gets a medal is one that rarely has a straightforward answer. Luckily that’s not the case here.

Real Madrid, despite their grand history, have not had as much of a loving relationship with the Copa del Rey as one might imagine. They have actually lost more Cup finals (20) than they have won (19), meaning that although the game appears one-sided, it is one time in Madrid’s season in which they cannot - or should not - call on history to help them out. As for Osasuna, the record is a lot easier. This is only their second final in their history, and a win against Real Madrid would see the club capture their first ever piece of silverware.

The last time Real Madrid won the Copa del Rey was back in 2014, with a certain Gareth Bale scoring the winner.

Which players get a medal for winning the Copa del Rey?

In addition to the trophy being raised by the winning captain, the winning team will also receive 40 winners’ medals that will be distributed among players, coaching staff and other first-team members. The same goes for the losing team, and they too will receive a second-place trophy, however it will not be presented at the winners’ ceremony and instead delivered to the club shortly after the event concludes.

Real Madrid take on Osasuna on 6 May 2023 at 4pm ET, with a few questions still to be answered: will Modric play? Is this Ancelotti’s last final? Who is injured for both sides?
