The women’s team for the Stars and Stripes has had a challenging year in general terms, but its players are aiming for everything in 2024.
One of the most challenging years for the U.S. Women’s National Team was 2023, where unfortunately, they didn’t have the desired successful run in the Australia-New Zealand World Cup, targeting a three-peat. However, 2024 will present the tasks of reclaiming the gold medal at the Paris Olympics, with some Gold Cup action before that, and they will do so with a rejuvenated team.
Guided by skilled players such as Sophia Smith and Lindsey Horan, along with the defensive strength of USWNT members like Crystal Dunn, Naomi Girma, and Emily Fox, they will strive to claim the top spot on the podium on French soil. Moreover, all of them are nominated for the Player of the Year 2023, and the favourite could be the forward from the Portland Thorns FC, Smith.
While it’s true that Horan will be in contention playing for Olympique de Lyon and being one of the main leaders of the team led by Twila Kilgore, Sophia Smith was the only American player nominated for the Ballon d’Or won by Aitana Bonmatí. This could make her a strong contender for domestic recognition.
The rest of the nominees had a year that, in general terms, could be considered modest, but they remain crucial for the United States due to their experience, playing time, and strength in notable championships. In the cases of Dunn and Fox, they are credited for their performance in the Women’s World Cup, while US Soccer highlight the fact that Girma was chosen as the Defender of the Year in the NWSL.

Thompson one of the young star
Angel City FC player, Alyssa Thompson, is one of the nominees for the Young Player of the Year 2023, and with her recent debut in the senior team a few months ago, everything indicates that she is the favourite to win the award. Additionally, Olivia Moultrie also made her debut with the USWNT, while Ally Sentinor, Savannah King, and Onyeka Gamero complete the list of young players.
