It is finally that time of the year where we can say that the repechaje of the 2023 Clausura is right round the corner; eight teams will be brought down to four as they go head to head in a do-or-die 90 minutes in which anything could happen.

Seventeen match days are over and the repechaje promises to be one of high emotions for all involved, with some of the country’s great teams facing off against each other to advance to the summit of Mexican football. We take a look at the fixtures and give our thoughts on which teams are likely to go through, and which have it all to do.

Cruz Azul vs Atlas

The battle is, on paper, one of the most even. With Ricardo Ferretti on the bench the team have plenty of experience and they will welcome a young Benjamín Mora and his red & blacks. Julio Furch will not be available due suspension and the spotlight will be on Julián Quiñones. In the Azteca and with a good sense of momentum behind them, the AS prediction is that Cruz Azul will get the win.

Pachuca vs Santos Laguna

Nobody can discount the current champions of Mexican football, the Tuzos did not manage to get to the liguilla but they are the favourites against the team from Torreón. Reppeto doesn’t have a lot of time to prepare his team and all roads point to them not getting through. Pachuca are the favourites for this one.

León vs Atlético San Luis

Tigres, despite being the favourite in the Concacaf Champions League, lost out to León in a dramatic game and as such, La Fiera come into the tie against Atlético San Luis in flying form. Given such huge momentum, if they play to their best and show what they have done throughout the season, we think that León will have little trouble in overcoming their rivals.

Tigres vs Puebla

Los Felinos come into the game hurt after their elimination from the Concachampions and will want to exact revenge on their next opponent. La Franja had a fantastic game at home against Xolos and they will be a tough team to beat in this round. Despite the two sides being more or less equal, AS thinks that Tigres have what it takes to win.
