On Wednesday, the match between San Jose Earthquakes and LA Galaxy took place during the second round of the 2024 Leagues Cup, with Galaxy edging it 2-1. Greg Vanney’s team, thanks to a later Miguel Berry goal, made a significant stride in the tournament between MLS and Liga MX. Their next match will be against Chivas de Guadalajara, where they will compete for first place in Group B.

Galaxy score against run of play

The first action came quickly in the match when Gabriel Pec headed the ball, and William Yarbrough saved it for the Quakes (9′). Immediately after, Riqui Puig took a powerful shot close to the Mexican-American goalkeeper, hitting the ball into his face, prompting the medical team to enter for treatment.

Following this, San Jose had a couple of opportunities, but Novak Mićović saved them for the visitors. Norwegian forward Amahl Pellegrino and Ecuadorian midfielder Carlos Gruezo each had attempts from inside the Galaxy’s area, but despite being in very good positions, they could not beat the 22-year-old Serbian goalkeeper.

Despite not having control of the game, the opener for the Los Angeles franchise came in the 41st minute when Diego Fagúndez surprised the opposing goalkeeper with a tremendous right-footed shot. After good play by Gabriel Pec through the center, the Argentine winger received the ball at the edge of the area on the left wing and, created space to fire the ball into the back of the net.

Problems solved by Riqui Puig

In the second half of the match, when it seemed that LA Galaxy were managing their advantage better and was close to scoring a second goal, the Earthquakes equalized (75′). After a turnover, Gruezo sent a through pass to Jeremy Ebobisse, and the American forward, born in France, quickly finished as Mićović came out to challenge him.

Although the home team’s equalizer came, in the 89th minute, the 1-2 goal for Vanney’s side appeared. The opportunity opened up with a masterful pass into space from Puig to connect with Japanese player Miki Yamane, who, after getting behind the opposing defense, sent a cross to Berry. The forward, born in Barcelona, finished from around six-yards out.
