Despite being two national sides with a rich World Cup pedigree, Argentina and France have only ever faced each other on three occasions at the World Cup. Argentina holds the upper hand when it comes to head-to-head meetings at a World Cup having won two of the three meetings (1978 and 1930) but France can boast of claiming the recent win following a Round of 16 4-3 victory over the South Americans at the Russia World Cup in 2018.
Two stars apiece
France are the reigning World Cup holders having won the competition for a second time beating Croatia 4-2 in the Russian capital in 2018 with the win adding to the 1998 victory over Brazil in Paris.
One has to go back to 1986 for the last Albiceleste World Cup win when Diego Maradona was the last Argentina to lift the most coveted trophy in the global game. The Estadio Azteca win over Germany adding to the first ever Argentina win as the South American side ran out winners in the controversial 1978 tournament held on home soil where Mario Kempes was instrumental in securing a 3-1 win over the Netherlands at River Plate’s Estadio Monumental.
The winner of Sunday’s final will get to modify their national team shirt with the addition of a third star depicting the three World Cup triumphs.
Will the star be added to the sky and white of the Argentina shirt of to the dark blue of France?
