The Clausura 2023 tournament is now underway but some clubs are still looking to strengthen areas of their squads. Among them, are Cruz Azul who have indicated their defence as an area that needs attention. It became clear that new blood was needed at the back during the Apertura 2022, which is why they have been keeping a close eye on Mazatlán defender Carlos Vargas, a young player who already has built up a lot of experience in the top flight and can play at either left-back or centre-back.

Despite being only 23 years old, Vargas has already played for Tijuana, América, Monarcas Morelia and Mazatlán. His best period to date was the time he spent with the Xolos, where he developed as a youth player, prompting the Águilas to sign him in July 2017. Despite showing the he had the ability, Vargas was unable to break into the starting XI and he left in January 2020 after making 72 appearances.

Cruz Azul are aware that they will need reinforcements for the centre-back position as Ramiro Funes Mori will be free to leave this summer when his contract expires. Meanwhile another centre-back Julio César Domínguez has been suspended by the club for organising a drug-themed party for his son.

Carrera and Lotti yet to debut

New signings Augusto Lotti and Ramiro Carrera joined Cruz Azul last week, but were unable to make their debut in the Week 1 clash against Tijuana due to immigration issues. The two Argentineans were waiting for their visas to be processed - a formality which needed to be sorted out before they can play in the Liga MX.

Lotti and Carrera were signed back in November but their previous club, Atlético Tucumán, did not send the paperwork on time, which has resulted in their debuts with Cruz Azul being delayed. Both players were finally registered this week and will be available for this weekend’s game against Rayados. Lotti has been handed the No.21 shirt, Carrera, No.23.
