France’s Clément Turpin will be the referee for today’s Derby della Madonnina, as Italian city rivals Inter and AC Milan meet in the second leg of the Champions League semi-finals (3pm ET/12 noon PT).

Inter head into the clash with a 2-0 lead, after goals by Edin Dzeko and Henrikh Mkhitaryan gave Simone Inzaghi’s men a commanding advantage in last week’s opening leg at San Siro.

A referee with a UCL final on his resumé

Added to FIFA’s international list in 2010, Turpin is a highly experienced referee, with a total of 42 Champions League games under his belt since his tournament debut in 2014. He has been handed 11 knockout-stage assignments so far in Europe’s elite club competition - including Real Madrid’s victory over Liverpool in last season’s final.

He was also appointed to the final of the 2020/21 Europa League, and has refereed at four major tournaments in the international game: the European Championships in 2016 and 2021, and World Cups 2018 and 2022.

Turpin’s previous UCL experience of Inter, AC Milan

In the Champions League, Turpin has crossed paths with Inter three times, all in the group stage. He took charge of the Nerazzurri’s 2-1 win over Tottenham in September 2018, their 3-2 defeat to Real Madrid in November 2020, and their 2-0 loss to Bayern Munich in September 2022. Meanwhile, he has overseen two matches involving Milan: a 1-1 group-stage draw with Porto in November 2021, and a 0-0 second-leg stalemate with Spurs in this term’s last 16.

In his five Champions League games involving the Milan clubs, he has averaged 4.6 yellow cards and is yet to send a player off or award a penalty.

Turpin has also shown 4.6 yellow cards per game across his five Champions League appearances this season - just over the competition-wide average of 4.2 - and is yet to add to the eight red cards he had brandished before 2022/23. He has given four penalties, including two in his most recent match, a 1-1 quarter-final second-leg draw between Manchester City and Bayern in April.
