Both Bayern Munich and Manchester United get their 2023-24 Champions League group stage action underway at the Allianz Arena with a high profile, glamour opener.

The meeting will trigger memories of a balmy May 1999 night in Barcelona for older ‘Reds’ with the English side delivering one of the great Champions League finals to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat and lift the most prestigious in European club football.

Viewers in the US will be able to stream the Group A match live on the online platform fuboTV, which offers users a free trial.

Fast forward 24 years and it’s the Bundesliga side who start the competition as one of the handful of clubs capable of lifting the trophy with United starting to falter and the first question marks start to emerge about Dutch coach Erik ten Hag with dressing room unrest and disciplinary issues surrounding Jadon Sancho and Antony.

The German side also finally got the star striker they craved when England’s Harry Kane made the switch from North London to the Bavarian capital and has already started to find the net in the Bundesliga. The 30-year-old has been on target four times in as many games as Bayern sit on top of the table with co-leaders Bayer Leverkusen and the Londoner will relish the visit of United as he makes his Bayern Munich debut in the UCL.

Bayern-United: match officials

UEFA have designated Glenn Nyberg as the referee for the clash at the Allianz Arena with the Swede set to be supported on either line by compatriots Mahbod Beigi and Andreas Söderqvist.

The fourth official is another Swede in Adam Ladebäck with the Video Assistant Referee Pol van Boekel (Netherlands) alongside Spain’s Alejandro Hernández who is assigned as Assistant Video Assistant Referee.

Nyberg has already been in charge of a UEFA game this season, overseeing the Europa League (3rd round qualifier) in Piraeus between Greek giants Olympiakos and Belgian outfit Genk when five yellow cards were issued on the night as part of a 1-0 win for the home side.

Nyberg became a professional referee in 2008, has been an Allsvenskan (Swedish top flight) referee since 2013 and a full international referee for FIFA since 2016.

This will be Nyberg’s second season officiating in the UEFA Champions League as he oversaw two group stage games in the 22-23 campaign and just brandished four yellow cards across both matches.
