Who will be in goal for Cruz Azul when the Liga MX Clausura 2024 gets underway? Tiago Volpi, Camilo Vargas, Moisés Ramírez and Kevin Mier had all been touted as potential new signings, with Ecuadorian Ramírez initially seen as the most likely recruit after previously working with recently-appointed Máquina head coach Martín Anselmi at Independiente del Valle.

Early career success for Colombia call-up Mier

However, a potential move for the 23-year-old looks to have fallen through and Mier, who plays for Atlético Nacional in Colombia, is now set to move to Mexico City. Also 23, the 6′3″ goalkeeper was called up to the Colombian national team by current coach Néstor Lozano for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in November, although he has yet to make his international debut.

Since becoming Atlético Nacional’s first-choice goalkeeper for the 2021 season, Mier has helped his club with 2021 Copa Colombia, the league title in 2022 and the 2023 Superliga Colombiana.

Colombian goalkeepers in Liga MX

Several of Colombia’s finest goalkeepers have already played in Liga MX, with the iconic René Higuita turning out for the now defunct Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz. The late Miguel Calero, who sadly passed away a year after retiring from soccer, spent 11 years with Pachuca, while Camilo Vargas has won two Mexican titles since joining Atlas in 2019.

Cruz Azul have had some legendary goalkeepers over the years, including Miguel Marín, Óscar Pérez, Pablo Larios and José de Jesús de Corona. Could Mier be next?
