Little over a week has passed since América were crowned Apertura 2023 champions but the club is already busy making changes for 2024. Even though the team did not appear weak in any particular area during the tournament, the board is already thinking about refreshing some positions and making way for a new left-back. They have their sights set on one of the best Mexican prospects in that position.

A few weeks ago, there was speculation about the possibility of Gerardo Arteaga joining from Genk. The 25-year-old could return to the Liga MX after spending three years in Belgium, and according to various reports, América came close to sealing a deal. Arteaga’s signing would have made the Azulcremas an even more powerful force. However, they did not count on another club entering the fray - Chivas.

According to TUDN reporter, Daniel Velasco, Chivas expressed an interest while negotiations were already underway in an attempt to snatch the player away from América. Scuppering the deal and stealing the former Santos Laguna youth player would have caused a storm ahead of the next tournament and viewed as a clear sign of authority from Hierro and Gago.

Or Omar Campos...

Since Arteaga is the first option, apparently, for both institutions, América are best placed to resolve the left-back position as they have several other candidates - among them, Omar Campos. The 21-year-old Santos Laguna defender is considered one of the top national promises, so if an agreement is not reached with Gerardo, they already have an alternative.

Whoever ends up arriving will occupy the place of veteran Luis Fuentes who has been an undisputed first-choice in recent years and join forces with with Kevin Álvarez (after the retirement of Miguel Layún), as one of the most potent full-back pairing in the entire Liga MX. At the moment Cruz Azul also appear to be interested in Campos, but they have not launched a formal offer yet.
