Answering the question as to who is the best in the Mexican league (a bit like any GOAT conversation across club/national loyalties) is wrought with disagreements. But what we can do is consider the eight matchdays that have now passed in the Apertura 2023, a tournament that has displayed a highly competitive level among almost all the teams, and put forward opinions on who is performing to the highest level thus far. This is especially interesting given that the well-established dominance of a few teams has been displaced by the outstanding work being done by the likes of Atlético San Luis and Bravos de Juárez.

The current stars of Liga MX

With that said, and given how well the Liga MX has flowed despite interruptions caused by the Leagues Cup and FIFA international breaks, halfway through the season, certain players are beginning to stand out above the rest. This is due to their own influence and their direct contributions they provide to their teams. While it may seem a bit early to make final judgments, these players are currently contenders to finish as the best in the competition.

Diego Valdés

The offensive midfielder for the Águilas has been one of the most outstanding players, both for his club and in Mexican football as a whole. At the moment, he has accumulated four goals and two assists in eight games, showcasing a distinctive style when he takes the field for América.

It’s worth noting that he also ranks in the top 10 among Latino players with the most assists in any competition worldwide in 2023.

Juan Brunetta

The attacker for Santos has been one of the biggest revelations of the Apertura 2023, especially considering his performance in the previous season. With four goals and four assists in eight matches, he has helped the Guerreros secure crucial points and stay in contention for a spot in the Liguilla, demonstrating his capabilities in important matches.

Julián Quiñones

The signing that generated the most speculation at the beginning of the season has undoubtedly delivered the expected results with four goals and three assists in seven matches. Although the blue and cream forward hasn’t shone as brightly as he did with Atlas, he has worked effectively alongside the other stars at Coapa. He has performed exceptionally well when the moment calls for it, especially during injuries or critical situations.

César ‘Chino’ Huerta

One cannot deny the quality with which this Universidad player now competes. Regardless of your team allegiance, it’s impossible not to appreciate the enthusiasm and determination the 22-year-old brings to every ball and play. With three goals and one assist in eight matches played, as well as a national team call-up due to his outstanding performance (where he scored on his debut), he is emerging as a formidable threat on the left wing for any defense.

Juan Domínguez

Toluca’s attacking midfielder has delivered performances worthy of recognition, especially considering his four goals and one assist in seven games. With 12 points in the bag, the Diablos Rojos currently occupy the seventh position in the standings, and much of their success can be attributed to the 24-year-old Mexican.

After arriving from Necaxa, he has swiftly adapted and performed effectively within Ignacio Ambriz’s system.

So, that’s our pick. Let us know your preference in the comments section...
