Argentina completed their group stage campaign with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Peru on Saturday evening. That win made it three from three in the 2024 Copa América and extended Lautaro Martínez’ incredible scoring run.

The Inter Milan forward scored a brace against Peru to take his record in this tournament to four goals in three games. Argentina had already secured progression to the quarter-finals but Saturday’s win ensures that they top the group, earning them a more favourable tie in the next round.

As Group A winners Argentina will take on the team that finishes in second place in Group B. The final round of fixtures in that group will be played on Sunday evening, meaning that Argentina will have to wait to discover the identity of the quarter-final opponent.

Who will Argentina play in the quarter-final?

Group B is comprised of Venezuela, Ecuador, Mexico and Jamaica and any of those four teams could still, in theory, finish in second place. Venezuela are the current leaders with two wins from two games and they face bottom-placed Jamaica on Saturday. That means that even a point for Venezuela would be enough to clinch top spot and leave Jamaica stranded at the bottom.

That leaves Ecuador and Mexico, battling it out for second place in the group. Ecuador’s goal difference is marginally better meaning that Mexico must win their final group stage game to progress to the last eight.

“Tomorrow both teams will be playing for their lives, it will be an intense 90 minutes. We know we have to win, it’s the result that counts for us, we depend on ourselves, we have to be intelligent,” Mexico head coach Jaime Lozano told reporters on Saturday. “The atmosphere is good. I’m calm because of what the team has shown on the pitch and what reassures me is that they are strong.”
