Who will Mexico play in September, October international windows? European fixture planned
As the Mexican Soccer Federation seeks a permanent replacement for Diego Cocca, it is also making plans for high-profile friendlies this autumn.
The Mexican Soccer Federation (FMF) wants the Mexico national team to play friendlies against high-calibre opposition in the final months of 2023.
Amid upheaval in the Mexico set-up after Diego Cocca was sacked as head coach after just four months, FMF chiefs are busy designing the team’s schedule for the international windows in September and October, TUDN says.
Mexico plan European friendly
While Mexico have tended to favour the United States as an international venue for friendlies, the media outlet reports that the FMF is considering taking El Tri to Europe in September. The last time Mexico were in action on European soil was a friendly against Sweden in Girona, Spain, last November.
The clash at Estadi Montilivi, which the Swedes won 2-1, was Mexico’s final warm-up before the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
In addition to organising a game in Europe, FMF bosses are also planning a friendly against a top-level nation in October, TUDN says. As things stand, there is no indication as to the choice of venue.
Cocca out after Nations League disappointment
Appointed in February, Cocca was fired as Mexico head coach on Monday, in the wake of the team’s exit to the United States in the CONCACAF Nations League semi-finals.
Former Mexico international Jaime Lozano has taken over from the Argentinian in an interim capacity.
